Gas Prices Spike to Second-Highest Level Ever, Analyst Predicts $4/Gallon This Summer

NBC News reported today on a new Lundberg Survey showing that the average national gas price has spiked up 11 cents over the last two weeks to $3.00 per gallon, the second-highest level in U.S. history.
TRILBY LUNDBERG: We’re within a couple of pennies of the nominal all-time high last September, when there was a shortage of gasoline brought on by hurricane damage. And we’re just six cents under the real high — the inflation-adjusted high of March ‘81 — in today’s dollars.
Also this morning, Brad Proctor of GasPriceWatch (http://www.gaspricewatch.com/) told ABC News he was expecting possible $4/gallon gas prices this summer. “We’ll see $3 and possibly $4 depending where the summer goes in terms of hurricanes and other natural disasters that may happen. We’ll see an upward trend occur.”

The other America--the one with a majority who thinks Bush can play a role in gas prices but chooses not to--will be saying and hearing plenty about gas prices and their own pocketbooks in October and November, as they make their decisions for the election.

If it makes you feel any better, it cost me over $40 to fill up my compact sedan today, which I'm guessing has a much smaller tank than your mini-van!

We have a set number of oil refineries trying to meet an ever-increasing demand---everyone except UC Berkeley economics professors will tell you that is going to lead to higher prices...

About six of every 10 respondents said they consider Bush at least partly responsible for the high price of gasoline; almost six in 10 said their families have cut spending in other areas because of the cost of fuel.

"I think the economy could be doing better, and I think it reflects on Bush," said Carol Testa, 50, a 6th-grade teacher in Milford, N.J., who said she is a registered Republican and voted for the president in 2000 and 2004. "I'm disappointed in him."

Christopher Harris, another Republican voter, said he was disappointed in the president's performance too.

"I have been a Bush supporter going back a long way, but there are a lot of things I'm not happy about," said Harris, 36, a salesman of telecommunications equipment who lives near Raleigh, N.C.

"The economy just feels uneasy to me. I see waves of business, and then it drops back off," he said. "A lot of my customers have moved business offshore. I think there's been a lack of attention to the economy because of the Iraq situation."
Outside of the boardrooms and the country clubs, people are struggling. Profits are up at large corporations because wages haven't increased. The rank and file isn't seeing the economic surge that Bush is trying to claim as a victory.

I've actually put myself on a gas budget. $20 per week to get me to and from work. The only reason I spent that much yesterday was to go pick up my nephews this weekend.
