Pete Coors apologizes in drunk driving case

The former Senate hopeful was stopped May 28 near his Golden home after a trooper said he ran a stop sign.

Beer magnate and former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Pete Coors was arrested on a drunken-driving charge and is due to appear in court next week.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper pulled Coors over after he saw him run a stop sign around the corner from his home in Golden at 11:25 p.m. on May 28, according to Coors spokeswoman Kabira Hatland and the citations.

Coors stopped his 2004 green Jaguar in his driveway, and the trooper smelled alcohol, said State Patrol spokesman Trooper Gilbert Mares. Coors failed a field sobriety test, was placed in handcuffs and taken to the Golden Police Department jail, Mares said.

A Breathalyzer test showed he registered a 0.088, which is slightly above the 0.08 blood-alcohol limit in Colorado, Hatland said.

Coors was released from the jail nearly three hours after his arrest, Mares said. Coors was not officially booked, which usually includes fingerprinting and a mug shot, but was held until a sober driver picked him up, Mares said.

"These are common practices that they do," he added. "He was not combative, he was cooperative, and our metro jails like to save their bed space for more serious offenders."

Coors said he was headed home from a wedding reception in Denver.

"I should have planned ahead for a ride," Coors said Thursday in a written statement. "For years, I've advocated the responsible use of our company's products. That's still my message, and our company's message. I am sorry that I didn't follow it myself."

Coors, 59, also was cited for running the stop sign.

The real scandal is that he was found with an open can of Bud in the car.

Seriously though, he's an idiot. Show no mercy, as I think this country is waaaaay to lenient on drunk drivers.
