According to two conservative websites, White House political strategist Karl Rove has been promising GOP insiders that there will be an "October surprise" before the midterm elections.
"In the past week, Karl Rove has been promising Republican insiders an 'October surprise' to help win the November congressional elections," reports Ronald Kessler for Newsmax (http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/9/20/141615.shtml).
"President Bush's political strategist is also saying that the final two weeks before the elections will see a blitz of advertising, and the Republican National Committee is deploying an army of volunteers to key locations to help the grass-roots effort and monitor the election," the article continues. "The RNC is offering to fly in volunteers and cover their expenses."
A few weeks ago, another conservative publication, The American Spectator, reported that White House staffers had "been talking up the possibilities of an 'October Surprise' or two leading into the mid-term elections."

I'm reminded of the October, 1972 announcement by Henry Kissinger: "Peace is at hand."
Of course, peace in Vietnam was nowhere near at hand.
Trust NOTHING that Rove says.

Surely you don't think he'd plant a "bin Laden is dead" rumor six weeks before the election ...

Um that was the French, unless you think Rove has enough access in France that he can get them to leak this kind of information.

Um, the source of the leak has not been identified. French intelligence report + French newspaper does not = French leaker.

This Bin Laden story is so fishy! I do think Rowe will pull something right before the election. I just wish for one it would all backfire!!

ok let me put it this way if Rove was going to leak something thats not true just for points this does not help. Mother Nature taking its course and making bin Laden sick doesn't make bush look good. On the other hand, somehow saying we got intelligence from certain terrorists detained in Afghanistan recently and using that information to bomb a hideout in the caves in the pakistan, afghanistan border. Saying we believe Bin Laden might have been in the area but because of the location, terrain, lawlessness it would take time to be able to get a report on what really happened on the ground and if bin laden really was there. At the very least that shows Bush actively pursuing Bin Laden and going after him, that would be what would be faked if thats the goal. Faking this leak does not help Bush in any way, just shows Bush still can't get Bin Laden and the only one that could actually kill him was God.

Is this the same "October Surprise" that was predicted for 2004? That is, Bin Laden being trotted out to the public after Bush had him tucked away for several months just waiting for the best time to show him? LOL

LOL  Sorry, I just had to laugh at the words "French" and "intelligence" being used together... LOL
Carry on...

What was the "surprise"? I missed it. The only October surprise was Lurch putting his foot in his mouth with that crack about how only stupid people join the military.
I suppose Rove used subliminal pyschological techniques to get John Forbes Kerry-Heinz to put his foot in his mouth...again???

What would be the reaction to such a surprise? We've seen a few of them recently in presidential elections... Considering this time the State of the Union is not strong and questions about electronic voting, how do you think the Left would and should react if they don't claim on or both chambers on Capitol Hill?

Hopefully not with cries of fraud Dave, while i was very young reading back on it when the republicans took control of congress in 94 it wasnt something that was really predicted and all the sudden bam. Republicans can still realistically keep control of both houses and democrats could as easily win both too. Although maybe a little outrage might be good i REALLY want a paper trail on those machines and hopefully we can get it by 08.

Personally I think that they shouldn't be used until there is a paper trail. There have been too many demonstrations on just how easy it is for someone to alter the outcome. Everyone has their own opinions, of course, on whether or not anything was done during previous elections, and that is precisely why there NEEDS to be a trail to ensure that there is no tampering--it will curb attempted fraud and/or prove innocense of wrongdoing if there isn't any...
