Weight Gain Means Lower Gas Mileage

Want to spend less at the pump? Lose some weight.
That's the implication of a new study that says Americans are burning nearly 1 billion more gallons of gasoline each year than they did in 1960 because of their expanding waistlines. Simply put, more weight in the car means lower gas mileage.
Using recent gas prices of $2.20 a gallon, that translates to about $2.2 billion more spent on gas each year.
"The bottom line is that our hunger for food and our hunger for oil are not independent. There is a relationship between the two," said University of Illinois researcher Sheldon Jacobson, a study co-author.
"If a person reduces the weight in their car, either by removing excess baggage, carrying around less weight in their trunk, or yes, even losing weight, they will indeed see a drop in their fuel consumption."
The lost mileage is pretty small for any single driver. Jacobson said the typical driver _ someone who records less than 12,000 miles annually _ would use roughly 18 fewer gallons of gas over the course of a year by losing 100 pounds. At $2.20 per gallon, that would be a savings of almost $40.
Outside experts said that even if the calculations aren't exact, the study makes sense.
I know this question is coming, so here's the answer:
Regis = 6' 0" 177lbs.

I wonder if they'll ever do a "study" on the amount of "bodily gasses" emitted by overweight people compared to normal weight people and their effect on global warming...? :]
You know, flatulence from cattle is a major contributor to global warming...just ask Al Gore.

How old are you, 12? Jeez, you are so freaking annoying.

There must be some funky spores in the air in Mom's basement.

Lol...for some reason i find this funny, i think its the fact that someone actually studied this...I guess it makes sense. Americans need to lose weight, but come on...this is ridiculous. People are not going to lose weight to save a buck on gas and to save the environment.

And of course, the easiest way to drop several hundred to a few thousand pounds is to drive a smaller car.

You can also save gas by having Mom's government check direct deposited.

Regis, ever wondered why you have zero respect around here?

Did Regis do the study? How about we focus on the data and not the poster. Sure, he has a crude way of posting. But, dont attack the poster, debate the data.

You're an ass.
Could you use an intelligent conversation rather than resorting to name-calling, please? Thanks. If this is true, I don't see a problem with posting it. Obesity is a serious problem, and people would help their health a lot if it was reduced. As long as people continue to eat dairy and meat-related products and rarely excercise, I don't see it being diminished too much.

It's a lot more than just Al Gore who says that.

He's getting on my last nerve. He constantly posts articles with insulting name-calling headlines such as this one. You don't see a problem naming the thread "Lose some weight, fatty?" I do.
He doesn't believe any of what he's posting, including the statement about methane gas and cows. He's mocking anyone who believes in global warming. You don't get that? He does it constantly.

My car is one of the heaviest for its size... And gets perhaps the best gas milage. Certainly gives of less gas.

Maybe it's understandable, but I do wish there was more of a sense of community on this board. On several other LiveDaily boards that I've seen, there is a lot of arguing(with Christina's being the worst), but on most other non-political boards, people tend to get along very well. Politics tend to cause more arguing than any other subject, so maybe I should expect that. I don't recall ever lurking or posting on a politics-related board where people don't argue.

But SAA, you are fine with the name-calling in the title of the thread? Why?

I don't have a problem with the content of what is inside the thread, but I never commented on the title.

I've been called a "Hitler supporter"(then I've asked what statements I've made which show I support him and they don't respond after that), I've been called racist and hateful(only by strangers thankfully), Pinky has used the term delusional and other insults, and Lester X has used too many insults to keep track of. I'd say I'm more in the middle and obviously Regis and maybe a few other people are Republicans, but most people in here are democrats. They tend to agree so of course there won't be too much arguing. So, I would respectfully disagree with your statement. It's true to a degree but I wouldn't agree with it entirely.
