Bush Signs U.S.-Mexico Border Fence Bill

Oct 26, 11:32 AM (ET)

By DEB RIECHMANN

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush signed a bill Thursday authorizing 700 miles of new fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to give Republican candidates a pre-election platform for asserting they're tough on illegal immigration.

"Unfortunately the United States has not been in complete control of its borders for decades and therefore illegal immigration has been on the rise," Bush said at a signing ceremony.

"We have a responsibility to enforce our laws," he said. "We have a responsibility to secure our borders. We take this responsibility serious."

He called the fence bill "an important step in our nation's efforts to secure our borders."

The centerpiece of Bush's immigration policy, a guest worker program, remains stalled in Congress.

And a handful of House Republican are at the brakes, blocking negotiations with the Senate for a bill that includes the president's proposal.

Still, Bush argues that it would be easier to get his guest worker program passed if Republicans keep their majorities in the House and Senate after the Nov. 7 elections. His proposal would allow legal employment for foreigners and give some of the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States a shot at becoming American citizens.

The measure Bush put into law Thursday before heading for campaign stops in Iowa and Michigan offers no money for the fence project covering one-third of the 2,100-mile border.

I know where Junior can get $65,000 from someone who actually likes this idea!

I don't really have a problem with this but it is not a solution, it is not even a start at a solution, it might make some difference but in the end its worthless.

It's a 700-mile fence. Only problem is that the border is over 2,200 miles long. Math obviously is another one of Dubya's shortcomings *nods*

Well Bush didnt ask for the fence, it was a proposal that passed, so sadly you cant blame that on him. Also the idea has never been to build a complete fence all through the border, just strategically place it in the area where it is the most effective. Hence its only 700 miles.

Here's a problem... Does anyone know who they may plan to be hiring as the laborers needed to build this 700 mile long fence? :o

he didnt have to sign the bill......"the buck stops here".......this is a waste of tax payers money.

There's got to be a catch to this, I would imagine. I'd have to see how the fence looks like. I've read nothing about what Bush has promoted in regards to this problem, so I would guess that he's doing this to appeal to the Republican party who feels he hasn't done enough. It will likely disrupt animal life, but do little to prevent people from coming here. We need a good border patrol.

If I understand you Luis, you are saying this is fine, to eventually spend the money on this, which is something you essentially agree is worthless? How does that make sense?

My major problem with this is that they aren't building the fence north enough... Say, on the border where Texas meets the rest of the U.S. :o

The reason it makes sense is the following: Bush has no choice but to sign it, it makes him look too soft if he doesnt sign it. It's just not a time he can be vetoing bills like that but he needs to do that. As part of a comprehensive strategy a strategically placed fence could be a good idea. Alone it does nothing but together with other things it can help, so im hoping the comprehensive solutions for the problem are on the way.

So why couldn't he have issued one of his famous signing statements that essentially say he has no intention of enforcing this law?

Just thinking... if this proposed fence is to be made of metal, I sure wouldn't want to be anywhere near the thing if it gets hit by lightning anywhere along its 700 mile length. For that matter, I wonder if anyone has bothered to think this thing through enough to prevent this potential during its building process?

Makes him look weak to me: He's bolstered our true enemy, so instead he's going to pick on the Mexicans?
