I have this term paper due in a few weeks, and i have to pick a topic that would divide the country in a critical election. i was thinking war, but he said its too broad, to pick a specific war (iraq, iran, north korea, etc) or an element in the war or something of the like, but i cant think of 8 pages worth to say about it. lol and i need 5 sources so i am just stumped.
can any of you think of an issue that would divide the country in a critical election?
any ideas would be super appreciated :)

Electing instead of appointing supreme court justices.
Hmm.. maybe not. I'm not sure enough people care.

Global warming and what to do about it. I could imagine people writing 8 pages easily and it does get brought up in elections once in a while.

but im not sure its an issue that would actually divide our country the way vietnam did, or the civil war. most people are so apathetic these days that they just dont care...lol
maybe changing the term limits of a president? hm.
term papers are hard when i have to pick the topic. lol

It's 2008. With the presidential election coming up, how do you think this country would feel if Bush decided that we had evidence that some country (pick one rich in oil with a dictator Bush doesn't like) had WMD and he is trying to convince the country that we need to invade. The GOP candidate supports invasion, the Dem candidate does not. Six months before the election, terrorists bring down another US landmark. Now what?

i think that when our US landmarks get destroyed we become pretty unified in saying screw you to whomever did it. lol

Maybe, but I think we are a lot smarter after 9/11, and a lot less gullible. I don't think we will be willing to just go after the first convenient target again.

I do completely agree, but i think there are still plenty of people who do not.
I think maybe North Korea, if they dont stop with their nuclear testing it what to do about it might divide the country. the thing is, whenever i come up with something i cannot think of 8 pages worth of stuff to say about it, or come up wtih 5 sources for it. how do you find 5 scholoarly sources about a potential problem? lol maybe i should go talk to my professor. lol

Illegal immigration sure seems to be a topic dividing people here in the southwest. Giving amnesty to illegal immigrants?

^I was going to say the same thing. I don't think you'd have any problem finding sources, as scholars are already debating the impact of various scenarios to address the illegal immigration issue.

Oh yeah, I like that one! Amensty is a good one. Dig really deep and you'll find all kinds of racist overtones.
