Mind you, I'm not a huge movie person, and I probably don't even see half the movies I get an inkling to see.

That said, I have one flick of the handful I saw:

Dead Man's Chest!

Which I bought yesterday on DVD, for the record. ;)

The back of the DVD reads:

'Little Miss Sunshine dropped from celluloid heaven.'

Do you work for the San Francisco Chronicle?

P.S. "Little Children" is long, but you'll only think it's boring if you think "A Walk to Remember" is the best movie ever made.

Oooh, I forgot Starter For Ten. OK, so the movie isn't going to change the world or anything but it kept me smiling for the duration, I found it very uplifting and it's about one of my favourite quiz shows!

A Prairie Home Companion remains my #1 movie of the year.

Saw Notes on a Scandal tonight; loved it!

The Departed rocked my socks.

What else? V for Vendetta was ok.

I have much to see still.

I saw 13 Tzameti a few months ago. It wasn't a popular film, it's actually a French thriller, but I thought it was amazing. I have never seen a movie that made me feel as intense and crazy as this one. I thought my heart would explode from the suspense.

I thought you hated it.

I thought you hated it.

It's only there by default. And I didn't hate it, I just didn't like it. But that's proof of how little movies from 2006 I have seen.

Here's my reorganized top however many:

1. A Prairie Home Companion
2. The Departed
3. Notes on a Scandal
4. Children of Men
5. V for Vendetta
6. Marie Antoinette
7. The Good German
8. The Devil Wears Prada
9. Brick
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
11. The Black Dahlia
12. Little Miss Sunshine

Notice how it keeps sliding down? I didn't care for The Black Dahlia too much either.

I'm also seeing The Prestige soon, and there's a TON of movies I still want to see. So I'm sure my final list of favorites will look very different later on.

But first, I have a date with film noir. I'm seeing The Narrow Margin and Born to Kill tonight. I also wanna check out the commentary on the Brick DVD.

Btw, did you ever see The Good German? And what about Prairie did you not like? Where do you stand on Altman? Or the source material?

I can't believe you're putting movies you don't care for on your list. :p

I just caught up on a lot of stuff from '06. It was a fairly decent year.

I haven't seen any of those. I have The Prestige on DVD but I'm too lazy to watch it. I was never a fan of Prairie, so I wasn't really looking forward to the movie. I do love me some Altman, though. I'm waiting till that gets on cable. I'm sure it'll premiere really soon. I have a copy of Dahlia but that looked terrible. Maybe I'll watch that and The Prestige this weekend. I still have to see Little Children. I've had that DVD for months. :o

Have you seen Hard Candy? Mini's First Time? Venus? A Scanner Darkly? Sherrybaby? Last King of Scotland? Jesus Camp?

LJK
Feb 28th, 2007, 09:36 PM
I saw Hard Candy, Venus, A Scanner Darkly and Jesus Camp.

I love Hard Candy. It's #2 on my list of favorites from last year. Venus was overrated with an okay but not great performance from Peter O'Toole, who should have gotten an Oscar for My Favorite Year 20 years ago, A Scanner Darkly isn't my kind of film but it was good for what it was, and Jesus Camp was one of the scariest films I've ever seen.

I thought all of the performances in Venus were divine. I really liked the movie.

I know A Scanner Darkly won't appeal to most but I was completely hynotized, mesmerized and chilled to the bone. Saw Jesus Camp for a second time on Tuesday night. Those poor kids. I want a follow-up in 10 years. It'll be interesting to see where they end up.

I realize that the thread asks for movies that rocked my year. :o And my problem with Little Miss Sunshine lies more with the ending and the reception from the media/public/masses/whatever...

http://talk.livedaily.com/images/ld/icons/arrow_alt.gifAnd this would rock anybody's year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xmPxstKwEU
http://www.oscarwatch.com/forums/images/smilies/clap.gif

But once you've seen that (^), you've seen it all. In the end it's a cute picture with some likeable (sp?) aspects, but the finale killed it for me. And that prevents me from listing it as a favorite, but my lists of movies are based on both my favorites of the year+ranking all the movies that I saw that year.

Like I told you, I haven't even begun to strach the surface of last year's movies. What's listed there is basically all I've seen. Except for X3 and Lady in the Water, but those were so bad that I simply refuse to list them at all. :o

I was just WAY TOO BUSY with school and work last year taking most of my time to get time off and enjoy movies. http://talk.livedaily.com/images/ld/icons/frown_alt.gif

As for Prairie (and Altman), I hadn't even heard of the radio show before I read that Bob was making a movie based on it, so maybe going in without expectations or previous knowledge of the source material allowed me to enjoy it in a way I may not have otherwise. And maybe even the fact that Altman died last year's got me biased, but no. Even after I saw, and loved, The Departed, I still had Prairie as my #1. Now I'm even considering whether I liked Notes on a Scandal better than TD. So Prairie is without question the best '06 release I have seen yet.

Wait, did you see A Prairie Home Companion? Or are you saying you'll wait for it to show up on cable so you can give it a 2nd viewing?

Btw, my problem with the Dahlia movie also had a lot to do with that godawful ending and that ridiculous bitch overacting her way to death. Otherwise, it was a generic film noir full of De Palma touches that bordered on being good (straight  the horror!) porn. :hat:
