Overrated or not. I have heard a lot of praise and a lot of criticism. I've never read any of her stuff, but I am about to read Emma.

Definitely not overated. But definitely of a different era. For what she does, exploring the nuances and sensibilitites of a repressed era, Austen is the master. Her books are slow-moving, but rich in period, insightful in character, and elegant in style.

Personally, I find the Bronte's more fun to read because of better plotlines. Thomas Hardy is even better at setting the mood of the era--at least outside of the parlor.

In my view, one of the absolute best books--albeit later in period--is Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage."

Thanks, I actually like novels that focus on a different era, I'll definitely check those out.

I love Jane Austen. I have just started reading Persuasion. I have read Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. Once I have read Persuasion I will probably read Emma and then I will have read all of her main novels. :) I realise she's not to everyone's taste but I enjoy her books.

She remains my #1 fave author. Read everything by her you can, because she is quite amusing and well... entertaining, in a subtle, clever way.

imo, no one has surpassed her as far as English novels go....all her books are killer reads but in a quiet, intelligent way.

I have only read Pride and Prejudice and it was really good.

Jane Austen is definitely not an overrated writer .. even though her books reflected the time in which she lived in, it has that universal appeal that makes it read and appreciated not only in classrooms alone today. Her writing was so damn witty and the character development is so striking.

Pride and Prejudice is always a favorite, but Sense and Sensibility was great.

The Brontes were similar in a sense, but they were much darker ..

Jane Austen paved the way for a lot of women during her time on earth. She had independence and her spirit was way ahead of her time. I love her and have read all her books. I also look up to her
