Edwards takes heat over lavish estate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two homes, two images, one candidate.

Democrat John Edwards, who has made an anti-poverty message the theme of his 2008 presidential campaign, is taking heat for the lavish home he has constructed in Orange County, N.C.

In December, Edwards chose the modest backyard of a New Orleans woman who had lost her home to Hurricane Katrina as the image that best underscored his campaign theme.

Now voters are seeing another, sharply contrasting image of Edwards: his own home.

Sitting on 102 secluded acres — surrounded by trees and defended by no-trespassing signs — the 28,000-square-foot estate that Edwards and his family call home has presidential privacy.

A main home has five bedrooms and six-and-a-half baths. It's connected by a covered walkway to a bright red addition known as "The Barn," that includes its own living facilities along with a handball court, an indoor pool and an indoor basketball court with a stage at one end. Nearby, the family has cleared space for a soccer field.

You have a new obsession, I see. Haven't you posted on this topic before? Do we need to hear about it yet again?

Yes. This is a new angle on the same topic.

Edwards is really "in tune" with the needs of poor people alright.

No, it's the same angle on the same topic. What's "new" about it?

Why the hell is it impossible for a rich person to be in tune with the needs of poor people? I realize you're not in tune with those needs, but that's because you don't give a damn about poor people, as you've proven repeatedly. Who cares about "losers" who don't earn above minimum wage, right?

Wow, that estate is a small town.

I mean, I cant judge the guy or his family, if they have the money, they earned it, they can do whatever they want. But also, if he plans on running for a position such as president, he should expect to be under the microscope.

Personally, my family would have no need for an "estate", just a simple home, with a front and back yard, some garden space, thats all. I can think of better things to spend my money on. But to each their own.

If he's president, this would be his equivalent of the ranch in Crawford, Texas.

I dont see why him spending his personal money on buying a house is anyones business. What does this have to do with his political ideologies, or campaign or anything to do with his professional life at all?

He's rich. awesome. If i were rich I would buy a big nice house too. and maybe I'm remembering wrong, but didn't he grow up poor? I imagine, having grown up poor myself, that having the ability to buy a big lavish house is a dream come true.

Many presidents establish a compound away from Washington to do business away from the White House. It's not a rare thing. Reagan had his ranch. Jimmy Carter had his place in Georgia. Gerald Ford set up shop in Vail, Colorado.

Bill Clinton was the only president in recent history not to have one.

For anyone to judge a presidential candidate on the money they have is completely ridiculous, you HAVE to have money to run for president. The difference is, he actually CARES about the poor, he sees their point of view, he knows the problems they face, he will actually fight for the middle class and poor. President bush is rich and fights for his friends and himself to stay that way, he doesnt do anything for the poor except for the minimum which is required of him. I dont think i really want him as president, but i definately respect his position and am glad to see a rich person want to do some good in this country instead of one selfish act after another.
