Edwards to Skip Fox News Debate

By MIKE BAKER
Associated Press Writer

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Friday pulled out of a second debate co-hosted by Fox News Channel, saying the cable network has a conservative slant.

The Edwards campaign said it will not attend the Sept. 23 debate hosted by Fox News and the Congressional Black Caucus Institute, but officials added that Edwards will participate in a different debate hosted by the institute and CNN.

"We believe there's just no reason for Democrats to give Fox a platform to advance the right-wing agenda while pretending they're objective," said Jonathan Prince, Edwards' deputy campaign manager.

It's the second time Edwards has decided to skip a debate because of its affiliation with Fox News. Edwards decided in March that he would pass on an Aug. 14 debate in Reno, Nev., co-hosted by Fox News and the Nevada Democratic Party.

The Nevada Democratic Party canceled that debate just days after the Edwards announcement, citing comments by Fox News President Roger Ailes that the party found offensive. Ailes had made a joke comparing the name of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to that of Osama bin Laden.

Online activists and bloggers have assailed Democratic leaders who have tried to work with Fox News, saying the cable news network is biased.

The Democratic National Committee has sanctioned six debates before the 2008 primary season, but it has snubbed the Congressional Black Caucus Institute debate.

Well...he's already pulled out of one debate being hosted by Fox....if he didnt pull out of this one, you would have started a thread slamming him for not being consistant.

Edwards is the type of guy that no matter what he does or says...your going to find a way to turn it and twist it around.

thats all you do.........

oh...and one more thing...your signature...is that something that you believe?

if you believe that, then you should believe that President Bush shouldnt be our President.

Considering the candidate that Regis supports, he'd best not make any comments about consistency!

Yes, the Great White Hunter has certainly opened himself up to charges of flip-flopping, hasn't he?

this is really stupid on their part. You would think they would want to reach a wide audience, you would think they would want to be on the highest rated cable news channel, you would think they would want to reach an audience that might not normally vote for them. As wrong as the stereotype that democrats are wimps is they really have a way to constantly prove it right.

I think Edwards is doing a smart thing...he's going after the liberal base right now...the majority of the liberal base HATES Fox News...this shows that he's one of us and will not help the ratings of a News Channel that his so openly biased.

Although I do not like Fox News, I agree with Venus on this one. I realize that right now he's working on securing the democratic nomination, he needs to be looking ahead, too. Right now, he's basically preaching to the choir. The trick with the next presidential election, I think, is going to be for the democrat to prove to those republicans and moderates that are disenchanted with the current administration but not yet ready to support a democrat that he will be a strong leader. Which means, in my opinion, that he needs to be out there "fighting" rather than simply talking to those who already basically agree with him. Right now republicans are calling him wimpy and saying that he runs from fights; and this is kind of proving them right. I completely understand why he doesn't want to do these debates because of the Fox bias, but...I think *most* people already *know* there's a bias there. I think he's missing a good opportunity to win over some of the moderates...

I doubt that any moderates or conservatives will manage to not know about any of the other debates that he'll participate in. Fox will cover them and even show video clips, so their audience won't miss a thing.

He's taking a stand on principle. I admire him for that.
