I thought the Edwards' were concerned about the poor and downtrodden...

I guess they only care about the Democrat poor, you "rabid Republican" gunowners need not apply.

Elizabeth Edwards afraid of neighbor

She has never met `rabid Republican,' but wouldn't be nice

RALEIGH --Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the "rabid, rabid Republican" who owns property across the street from her Orange County home -- and she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.

Edwards, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, particularly recalls the time neighbor Monty Johnson brought out a gun while chasing workers investigating a right of way near his property. The Edwards family has yet to meet Johnson in person.

"I wouldn't be nice to him, anyway," Edwards said in an interview. "I don't want my kids anywhere near some guy who, when he doesn't like somebody, the first thing he does is pull a gun out. It scares the business out of me."

But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval.

"I use the gun for protection, and I considered that an appropriate time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you have to take drastic measures."

Edwards views Johnson as a "rabid, rabid Republican" who refuses to clean up his "slummy" property just to spite her family, whose lavish 28,000-square-foot estate is nearby on 102 wooded acres.

How is this story about a suburban neighborhood have any relevance? That guy sounds like a nut job, nothing new.

"Suburban neighborhood"??? That's one of the most exclusive areas in N.C.

*I'll post a photo when I get home.*

Edwards' has a 28,000 square foot house. It's the biggest house in the county.

I only assumed that when I read Orange County and you asserting that Mrs. Edwards didn't care about the "poor and downtrodden." Don't bother posting a picture, it'll only add less relevance.

But Johnson defended the occasion he brandished a gun, saying those on his land didn't have the proper approval. What approval was he looking for? Did he even bother to ask them what they were doing there before pulling out his gun?

From the story, it sounds like the answer is no.

Stories that start with a hothead and a gun rarely end well.

Exactly, Richard. Any parent who would allow their child near someone who likes to brandish weapons is an idiot.

two points:

1. It depends how the gun situation happen if he went runing at them and yelled at them to get the f out and he was running with a gun, thats bad. If he on the other hand brough it with him, asked them if they had any authority to be there because otherwise they best be moving a long because its private property then its ok.

2.She shouldn't judge him until at least talking to her neighbor, if that one situation is the only thing she is judging him on is a bit unfair. Yeah she doesnt have to leave her kids go there but i wouldnt let my kids(if i had them) hang out with most of my neighbors and none are nut jobs that i know of.

Sounds like my neighborhood. lol Lots of folks up here own guns. I would never enter someone's property unannounced, because there's a really good probability I'd be met by someone brandishing a weapon, Republican or not.

However, in an exclusive suburban neighborhood? Sounds like this guy's a bit of a throwback. But, I agree with Venis. Ms. Edwards should probably try to talk to the man instead of labeling him in the press as some kind of kook. That isn't going to improve the situation.
