A quick side note on President Bush's "invitation" today to Dem Congressional leaders asking them to sit down with him for some non-negotiations over what to do about Iraq:
Let's not forget that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi already have repeatedly sent letters to Bush asking him to work with them on an Iraq compromise.
Interestingly, Speaker Pelosi's office confirms to me that the White House hasn't answered any of these entreaties.
Letter to Bush, March 28 (http://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/pressreleases?id=0127):
Mr. President, this is the time to sit down and work together on behalf of the American people and our troops. We stand ready to work with you, but your threats to veto a bill that has not even been presented to you indicate that you may not be ready to work with us. We hope that is not the case.
Letter, February 14 (http://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/pressreleases?id=0072):
Mr. President, it is wrong to deploy troops to the Iraqi theater until they have the up-armored Humvees, equipment, lodging, training and other support required to carry out their mission. We hope you will work with us to make sure that they do. Our troops and their families deserve nothing less.
It isn't terribly surprising, of course, that the White House hasn't answered these, given the public nature of these sorts of letters, but the Dems' invitations -- and Bush's non-response to them -- are certainly worth keeping in mind now that Bush has "invited" Dems to sit down with him.
