Some random thoughts from the pieces I've seen on television...

- someone forgot to tell Melissa Etheridge that the shows were about getting green, so she used the opportunity to trash Bush;

- Jon Bon Jovi is under the mistaken thought that Giants Stadium is his home, so I guess he is ignoring the 16 shows that Bruce has done at the stadium;

- good time to be in Great Britain -- impressive back-to-back weekends at Wembley and a pretty decent tennis tournament not too far away. :music:

Ya know, i have nothing against these concerts or people's expression of opinion but i wonder if we could get all of these artists together for a world concert against suicide bombers and people who think their religion enables them to eliminate the rest of the people on the earth. There are tons of important issues in the world and i'm not trying to be coy but i honestly wondered this thought today. Probably wouldn't be too cool to have a show against that. Maybe it's me getting old but no matter your politics or beliefs or favorite rock star's mantra--- stopping the spread of terrorism supercedes everything. If you are being blown up in a marketplace or if you are from Israel and basically most of the planet wants you dead or will look the other way while you are the middle of all of the sh*t part of it all, does it really matter? Maybe i'm a cynic but Democrats and Republicans are going to have to deal with this stuff from here on out so we better figure the game out soon. Rock on.

Live Aid ...it's not

Bush aside,,,,,or is it Bush on the side?Melissa way way over the top in trying to rally the troops

Stephen...Cat...Yusef.... good to see after all these years....needed more rehearsal...I am over my teenage crush

I can't get enthused over a turntable as a musical instrument

Madonna????a choir again?Amish dress....I walked out on her at Live Aid...I would have done it again. Was that a dress from Madonna's Clothing line available at affortable prices at a department store near you.

I love Roger Waters and of course the pig

Hips don't lie...no they don't...good for her.Always liked Shakira

Ok with Duran Duran...they are what they are and were

John Mayer---no problem with him

Genesis----no problem with them...reminded me of the last time I saw them during a summertime arena concert-----twas fun

Dave Matthews...convincing on "House "

If I was baking in the heat and had to hear one more rap song by a droop drawers dude saying "I can't hear ya" I would have fashioned a noose from cargo pants ties and hung myself with a request for a green recycle body bag prior to the act.

Was that Garth & Trisha???????? I went to wash my hair

Does Bon Jovi have an extra bio diesel fuel truck for his ego when on tour?

Joss Stone....I like her voice and comfort on stage

Awaiting the Police....can I black out the lead singer???

And yeah London looked like it had fun.

I totally forgot all about this today -- didn't watch any TV (well. except for a DVD of two BORG episodes on Star Trek The Next Generation with the family), had a Bruce boot in the car so I didn't hear anything on the radio -- what does that say about my level of interest in this whole event?

("I am Locutus of BORG" -- we could go off on a whole other tangent about collective consciousness and BORG vs Tribbles and Picard vs Kirk and and and .... :) :) )

I was at Giants Stadium. Joined Mickey and Mindy for a little tailgating in the parking lot. He was very impressed by my better half's ability to produce attractive daughters (and her daughter's choice in girlfriends).

Roger Waters (and the pig) were great. One side said SOS - Save our Sausage. The kids choir he used was also great.

The Police, Dave Matthews, John Mayer and Alicia Keys were all good. I can't say they did anything to convince me to pay to see them again. Can't say I wasn't fantasizing about who the extra mic was for during the Police's set, was a little disappointed when John Mayer started using it (sorry John). Kanye West rapping "Message in a Bottle" was a lot of fun.

Smashing Pumpkins were very intense, not really the kind of music I listen to - but their drummer was great to watch.

Melissa Etheridge was boring. When you are a rock artist playing in a stadium it is advisable to play at least one rock song.

Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson and Kanye West certainly put on performances the rest of the crowd liked. I just went along for the ride.

The big screen camera work made me appreciate what a great job Bruce's crew does. 99% of the time the big screens had the shot from the handheld camera in front of the lead singer.

The shuttle bus to the remote parking lot was a major cluster*&%$. Not terrible getting to the show, the line was very long but moved fairly quickly. But the show ended at 10:30 and I got back to the parking lot two hours later and there was still a large amount of people waiting for a bus when I finally got one. Apparently a minor riot broke out boarding busses which involved ambulances etc.

Like it or not,
As someone said on another board,
John Bon Jovi is the new face of New Jersey Rock and Roll.

That's just the cold hard truth.

It's Ok,
Bruce has rightfully been crowned the current face of New Jersey Folk !

Regarding some of your other points. I like Melissa Etheridge, but not only was she clueless, her performance sucked. I had to turn it off, it's almost like the talent inside her was killed by the chemo.

First time I ever saw Roger Waters, thought he was great.

The Police sucked, that made my decision easy, I will not be buying a ticket to see them.

Alicia Keys, loved her from her first release, and she basically stole the show up up to when she performed.
She was a top 3 of the entire NJ show.

I love Joss Stone,
I picked up her first CD also. I couldn't believe the soulful powerful voice that comes out of that cute young girl. She's growing up and she is really beginning to shine as a performer now.

Dave Matthews--eehhhhhhhhh
I've been trying to talk myself into going to see him for years now, this set didn't push me one way or the other.

Bon Jovi - great set no matter what you think of him/them. I know he copies Bruce(so what, that's a fine model to follow), but he has got it down. He puts out releases in a timely manner, has a hit song or 2 off of every release, has hugely successful tours every time out. Like them or not Bon Jovi does it right. As for his ego, I've met him several times in a few different settings, he's always been a nice down to earth guy.

Smashing Pumpkins - My God Billy Corgin has a terrible voice live. How many of those Pumpkins are original besides Billy?
I did not enjoy them

Kelly Clarkson - People will always see her as American Idol. The girl can sing, and she put on a nice performance that got the crowd up. I'm sure this is probably the largest crowd she ever played to, she did well. I'm glad to see she's trying to become a complete artist by writing her own songs.

Genesis came off drab to me when I saw the rebroadcast. I still want to see them when they hit Philly though.

So there I am in a bar, after being backstage with Jill (she's recorded her first shows this weekend and handed out a little doo-hickey free - a USB Port wire that will allow us to download the show), and I'm talking with friends. Then I hear the Police. I turn around and there are five people in the place. I go up to the bar and I'm watching I think "Next to You" and I'm starting to sink my mind into it. I"m getting worried. Andy looks asleep. Sting has that glow in his face that Madonna gets "LOOK AT ME!" and Stewart's back there, the only guy working for the money.

About 3 minutes into this, the bartendress/bartendrette says "Oh I have to watch the Mets - forget this" and shuts it off! I'm incredulous! "You have got to be f'ng kidding me?!!" "No I'm not - it's the 15th Inning!" she says glaring at me and staring around the room triumphant at crushing the patron's desires swiftly with a click of the remote.

I leave, go in and out of five bars and every one has a baseball game on.

After all that, while I had suspicion they migtht not have been that good, I wish I could have seen more. I must say in those scant three minutes, I was a little taken aback. It just seemed - disjointed.

Does anywhere know where we might be able to catch Live Earth reruns on TV?

Not a bad idea - I'll have a look see. Actually, the paramedics just left - they had to come here and give me several thousand Volts after my body had an adverse reaction triggered by someone's hallucinatory comment that Bon Girlie is now the undisputed Rock God of New Jersey!!

Phew. Wait. Could it be? I think I hear a rumblin' from the South, it's a twister, it's a rock and roll band! Oh Auntie M, is that Bruce and the Boys rising from the mists of time one more time to stride the earth like a collossus of Roads!!??? We can only continue the vigil.

I suppose it was reverse psychology by ol' Postal - thinking Bruce reads this and there over breakfast, was forced to grab Patti's (or Patty's or Pattie's or Paddy's or whoever it's spelled) arm - "Pats!! Read this??? This is like the Bat Signal over Gotham!! I gotta get back to rock!"

But yes, I'll check the cable:eek:

But I think these days if you polled 100 non Bruce or Non Bon Phony fans to give you a famous NJ rocker, you would get more Bon Jovi votes than Springsteen.

Just caught the Police set. Overall, pretty disappointing and surreal.
-- Was that purposeful to have Sting sing with a white circle light (halo) around his head?
-- As I was listening to the best song "Driven to Tears", I was struck initially how appropriiate and timely the song was ("too many cameras and not enough food/this is what we've seen") but that disintegrated into a shot of Alex Baldwin with a vacant stare in the audience surrounded by nubile young ladies in their twenties and by the time they got to the line ("my comfortable existence is reduced to a shallow meaningless party"), my sense of appropriate song reversed.
-- Ted Koppel on guitar
-- Stewart looked equal parts scared out of mind and clinically insane
-- This is supposedly a group of three top of the line musicians - or so I thought. What saddened me was that they weren't playing together and Summers was at times playing entirely different chords, off beat (or is that Stewart rushing a half step ahead throughout the songs). Even Sting's voice at times cracked.
-- The propulsion of the best of the Police's songs needn't be the energy of young punk band; they could have been alot tighter than this and touring since May 28?
-- Although I know we have alot of fervent rap fans on here, Kanya West was an abomination. I don't think there's anything more annoying than rappers strutting around with no voice, no sense of musicality and believing they're actually part of the song. It was stomach-churning - I don't know what Mr. New Orleans Reverse Racist Comments does on his own albums (he's apparantly a God), but here it was just embarrassing. Then Sting grabbing his hand and -- oh wait. Cash register.
-- There was no jamming - that was the worst.

But I hate to admit when I'm wrong - because I touted this tour as the tour to end all tours of come backs - they were sloppy, were not playing together and Summers and Copeland were just messy - wow. Maybe it was a blessing they put the Mets on in that bar.

Reasonably reasoned - but not as steep a fall as Country Pop. At least we know for a fact that Bruce ain't doin' Froggy for the Money. On the other hand in a recent interview, I could hear the sound of Bon Phony rubbing his wallet and salivating over the word "market" when talking about his hit.

you dont see feel or hear alot of things when you arent there.
Wayne it was finally nice to meet and talk with you.
Mindy,Phil and I didnt go in till about 4:30ish.The sun was just to hot. All the kids getting wasted in the heat was the sign to us to wear boots.
Someone should have been in control of greening the parking lot trash bins.By 4pm they were all over flowing with garbage blowing all over.Afterall,if the NJSEA cant green one silly parking lot how can we as a people green our Planet?
The change overs between artists was truely amazing. Most times you didnt have time to go pee. They actually ran AHEAD of schedule.
We rolled in when a reggae song was being played.I just stopped on the back of the floor and soaked it all in. I believe it was Akon and he sounded ok.
Mayer was ok.
Melissa was over the top with her yappin. But I expected it.I did question her song choices though. She has so many great sing along stadium rock songs. Why not have done a few of those?
I was really looking forward to Alicia Keys. She didnt disappoint me. She was entertaining. Sounded great.Didnt speechify much if at all. And she played her hits. I would see her alone in concert. Oh and she is just stunning to look at. She was highlight #1. The crowd was into her too.
DMB doesnt float my boat. But sounded good and his target audience was in the house.
Surprise of the night was Kelly. She has alot of fans and all of them must have been there last night ;) She admittedly is not at ease speaking in public and this was evident.
Highlight #2 was Kanye. He was very entertaining and sounded good.He appeared as if he actually wanted to be there.

Now we can say what we want about Jon.And god knows we`ve said it all ;) But he has his loyal fan base. And they too were in the house last night. They played all their hits to the crowds delight.Sounded very good. He really didnt speechify either. Oh and Al came out just to intro him
After they left the stage the crowd was pumped. I remember pitying the band that had to follow them. Whoever placed them in this slot just wasnt thinking.
I was looking forward to the Pumpkins and was totally  Whoever mixed them sound wise should be fired.
They were way to loud and unlistenable. But I`ll be damned if they didnt have a solid group of fans present.
Highlight of the night for me was Roger. The sound was great. He was very engaging. And the crowd was into him.Even the kids.I dont know the story behind the floating pig balloon but it was funny as hell. There was graffiti all over it.The funniest one was sprayed on the pigs peesh ;) I`d love to go see him in concert.
As bad as the Pumpkins were, the Police were worse !
This band should not be touring.OK they sounded good. But they are taking 4 minute songs and making them 8. They should cancel all shows and refund all monies.Or at least cancel the August NJ shows ;)
Alot of people left while they were jamming.
All in all it was a nice night spent with good friends.
If anyone is going to shows in this area this summer prepare for traffic and parking problems.

Here's a funny review from the Asbury Park Press forum. It's funny how the self-crowned king of the environment and inventor of the internet, who is supposedly an uber-business manager (if you listen to his sycophants) couldn't organize garbage pickup for his event. Maybe he was distracted worrying about how cooling his 22,000 square foot house and burning a large hole in the ozone layer. What a phony. Anyway, here's the review:
--------------------------

Their green transportation was an absolute mess. Most of the parking was 5 miles from the stadium. And people waited for 2 to 3 hours to get back to their car, and an equal wait to get in. Their was fights and arrests at people trying to get into the bus, back to the remote areas. State police had several dogs working crowd control. There were no, I repeat NO bio diesel buses or generators. You can smell them a mile away. They were school buses and about one tenth of what was needed. Al Bore the man who invented the internet proved himself to be the wrong end of a horse again. The entertainment was excellent. Roger Waters brought the house down and so did BON JOVI. No one cared about Al Bore idiotic talks, his policys are about as dumb as they come. No one wants to ruin the enviroment! BY the way the stadium looked liks a pig sty after the concert, there were no green containers to throw you garbage in. This mutants policys are against the farmers of the world. Every level of security and law enforcement complained this was the worst organized event ever.

Citing a press release by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, Drudge reports that Gore’s Tennessee household uses twenty times as much energy as the average person’s home, and that the former vice president’s energy consumption has increased since the release of his anti-global warming film. “The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy,” the report says. “In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh — more than 20 times the national average.”

I think I enjoyed this show because it gave me the opportunity to sample many acts which I would never go see if they were headlining a show. (Naturally, this works both ways. I can see if you are a big fan of one of the acts, you would be dissatisfied with a setlist consisting of only 4 songs.)

Alicia Keys looked and sounded beautiful, and Dave Matthews was a blast.
I was pleasantly surprised at John Mayer. I wasn't a fan of his "Your Body is a Wonderland" and just the thought of Jessica Simpson was enough to turn me off to him. But, he was pretty good.
I love Melissa, but she should, and could, have been better.
I took advantage of Kelly Clarkson's set for a bathroom break, but I was definitely in the minority. She has a huge fan base - people of all ages going crazy after her.

There was definitely a vibe in the air when JBJ hit the stage. You felt the crowd surge forward and there was a renewed energy. Personally, his set didn't do it for me, but I am prejudiced and was personally offended that they referred to Giants Stadium as his house, or home, or whatever.:rolleye2: It's official: First JBJ opens up the new arena and now this. Bruce, I guess you have relinquished your crown as the main man in NJ.:greyno:

Roger Waters was terrific. My biggest regret was not seeing his show a few months ago. I wanted to hear more. I also had severe flashbacks to my early high school years. It was cool seeing the Dark Dide of the Moon album rotating on a turntable on the video screens. Just like the old days.

It was interesting watching the crew prepare the pig for flight. The pig had been tethered in the stadium seats behind the stage. These poor guys had to jump over seats and climb down from the stands while maneuvering the huge piece of bacon. It wasn't easy. It took them two songs just to bring the pig out of the stands. Then, the pig was leaning toward one side. It looked like it wouldn't make it out to the audience in time. They needed about a dozen guys just to hold the cables and several other guys to lead the way and act as security while they led Porky thru the aisles. It was a sight to behold. The sky was turning dark and camera flashes were going off throughout the stadium as the pig made its way around. (as an aside: Just as the crew was coming back with the pig to go backstage, Trudie Styler and her entourage decide they want to come out and watch the Police from seats, where she could also get some media face time. Her gang was oblivious, or just didn't give a s**t, that these guys wrestling with a pig needed to get backstage quickly and safely. It wasn't easy for them. The area which led to the backstage area consisted of several platforms of varying heights. They needed to pay attention to where they stepped, or they could fall. In fact, a photographer did fall. So, as the crew comes back in to this little area leading to backstage, Trudie and her gang are pushing themselves out. The pig guys are nearly tripping over each other struggling to get in, but she didn't give a damn. Meanwhile, my hubby and I are stading in the middle of all of this, getting crushed ourselves.) By the way, she looks great up close, even if she looks like she had work.

The Police were just okay. I am wondering why I am going to see them next month, and I am glad we bought the cheap tickets. Reunion of the year??? I don't think so.

Can all of the Bon Jovi haters and Bon Jovi apologists unite on at least one undeniable fact? We all at least should acknowledge that Alicia Keys is, without a doubt, the most beautiful person making music today. I'm even including the very high number of performers, mostly women, who have been given recording contracts solely because of their beauty. That is clearly not the case with Keys, who has had two of the top five singles of this decade, IMO. She is very young and very talented, and this fall she will release only her third studio album. One of these days she's going to hit a tape measure shot...could be this fall.

It's only a "fault" if the artist gives a crap where he's ranked in the hierarchy of New Jersey rockers. Clearly Bruce does not, clearly Jon Bon Jovi does. I keep hearing people say they want more songs like the "rockers" on The River and BITUSA on the new record. To each his own, but personally I have no interest in Bruce Bon Jovi. I'd rather listen to 12 Froggies than listen to that tripe again. Already done it, no reason to do it again.

Really? What evidence from the last several years would you like to present to support your position...the position that Bruce actually gives a crap about his New Jersey rocker status? Personally I have only seen evidence that he cares about following his muse and maybe creating a more diverse musical legacy in the twilight of his long career. A reasonable person can argue about his effectiveness in that pursuit, but whether that has actually been his intent all along? I can't see it, but maybe you can. If so, congrats.

Alicia Keys was absolutely (IMHO of course) the only performer who rose to the occasion of being in a stadium with 50K people. She is a true performer who knows how to play to a crowd.

Roger Waters was very good but he plays stadiums.

If you don't think Bruce cares, you're delusional.

I don't consider myself delusional and I'm certain what Bonnie does or doesn't do has no impact on what Bruce does or how he feels about what he does. And it shouldn't. It's like whether Al Gore would be concerned that someone who posts on a web-board thinks he's a hypocrite for living in a house. It's all irrelevant and the great men continue going on their great paths as others either mock or imitate - but never approach legitimate comparison. So many of us, me included, are quick to comment yet we're not involved in anything where we're giving our life over to a cause that we know can literally save the world. That's pretty heavy. The great minds and governments of the world (dragging America and it's confederacy of dunces in tow) have already agreed there is an environmental crisis. But it will take more than changing light bulbs.

And Dex, while I agree Alicia is the closest thing to a Vogue model with a recording contract and even doddering Bob commented in his song there was nothing about her he didn't like, I also have to say we've come pretty far down the Music Business Indocrination Path when we evaluate a music artist's worth by their apperance. MTV has won, VH1 has one, the advertisers have won and ugly people like Adrian Belew are condemned to obscurity because they cannot please our eyes. Would Joan Osbourne's career skyrocket with lipsuction? Well, certainly Nelly Fertado has shown that looks can move a groove - and a unit.

Alicia's good - quite good - but because she's being marketed for her hot ass When she came out on stage, where was the piano? Nowhere, mon frere - she's asking us to "wave our arms like we just don't care". Well I guess we don't. That having been said, compare Genesis' choice of "World of Confusion" as a song choice (which Phil offhandedly introduced as "I guess song's appropriate") to what Alicia chose: the best song ever written in the soul and r&b medium about the environment "Mercy Mercy Me" - that, arguably, was one of the top three moments of the entire spectacle. Kelly Clarkson it wasn't.

But it's not about what we see with music (whether you're there at the show a football field away in the warm stench of beer and vomit unable to hear or see very clearly or whether you're listening and looking at it on a 61" HiDef television in the comfort of your own home) - it's what we feel and hear.

This wasn't MUSE - not by a long shot although spectacle certainly was on display, the way us shallow Americans like it - all full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. As much as it looked like Metallica gave the most powerful set from all the ones I watched and listened to, they're about the furthest from sincere environmentalists as anyone I can imagine.

Where were Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, CSN, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, U2, Billy Bragg, Arlo Guthrie, Dan Bern, Bruce Springsteen or the E Street Band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Pete Seeger, Wynton Marsalis, John Mellencamp, REM, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, the Band, or any of the scores of politically conscious - even Nugent? These acts were there to move product, first and foremost. Who can seriously believe that Sting and Kanye Omari West sat down and said "hey, you should rap on this song, let's rehearse this together?" No. Their managers or the agents whoever is in the charge of the Police $ Juggarnaut said "Let's cross market! The kids will eat this up!" Well, they may eat it up, but it cheapens both acts. I'd venture to guess the Kanye rap fans were as nauseated by seeing the two of them muck each other's sound up as I was to see him prance and spit like an idiot around the stage during the music's being played. It's like Puffy singing on "Every Breath".

I don't think it's a coincidence that most of those artists I mentioned took a pass on this and those who chose to play, did so to engratiate themselves with the public. It's what made this a far less believable "cause concert" than even Live Aid. It's why Geldof lept up and derided it because, aside from possibly ego issues, he's also got a sense that the legitimate tool of Music on a Global Scale for A Cause should retain some of its integrity - and this worked to undo that.

The cause remains just but this was not great music and great moments. I doubt anyone of us would buy the triple DVD or disc of this and play it endlessly, as we did MUSE, as we did the Last Waltz, as we did Bangladesh.

Great causes and great music can mix but even though those of us who enjoyed various parts of the show didn't mistake this for great music - or indeed, great music from great artists at a great moment - I think the inclusion of Spinal Tap was appropriate, a touch of humor for a thinly veiled marketing showcase shrouded around a good cause.

I say all this because I'm prompted that the reverse has occured: the thoroughly medicore music is being touted for better than it was (especially if the Almgiht Hits were played, appararently a barometer of greatness - although I'm sure people complained in the cellars of Greenwich Village when Monk failed to play "Pork Pie Hat" at one of his gigs), while the thoroughly legitimate cause was not elevated in people's consciousness but diluted in importance by comedic and marketing exposure. Who shrunk in fear about global warming after seeing this?

I would have given anything to have seen Madonna sing "Hey You" by Floyd - and not her kindergarnter song she wrote for this event. Is she having her daughter write lyrics now? Could we ever tell?

That having been said, as I said to Jill last night, it would have nice had she played Live Earth because with one song, albeit humorous, she got more of what this was about than all the hours of hits. In fact, she played it for Gore at an event years before this....

Admiral, I certainly will not argue with you that music shouldn't be about physical appearance. I've often wondered if even the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin could get a recording contract in this video age. I would hope that neither Britney Spears nor Jennifer Lopez could get a contract back in the day when music was (okay, mostly) about music.

A slick producer can make any voice sound decent on the radio. I will never forget the Superbowl show with Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Aerosmith doing Walk This Way a few years ago. Tyler did his turn at the mike, so did Timberlake, but when Spears stepped up I thought there was an audio problem. And in a way there was...there is NO voice there at all. Just an empty hole. I get mad when people say Britney shouldn't lipsync. If she's going to take the stage to gyrate around, she had BETTER lipsync. God help us all if she tries to sing for real. Same with Lopez and many, many others. And you guys complain about Patti's voice. Not sure you know how bad BAD can really get.

That isn't the case with a talented person like Keys, who is as easy on the ears as she is on the eyes. She could still get a contract even if she weighed 300 pounds. Okay, maybe 200 pounds. But still...

Got you. Although Aretha's voice is shot as well - she's not long for this world if she doesn't lose some weight - it's a crying shame.

I hestitate to be critical about it for fear of sounding old and grumpy but really - I remember one day at the ArtBar in New York City. I had dropped off my car earlier that week when the transmission blew as I rolled into a parking space by the Beacon to see Colvin. But that next day, when I came in to see what was going on with the car, I stopped by this bar. It was early afternoon - never a time I would go to a bar.

And I met two older black dudes there - just sitting and talking to each other - nice enough older guys. No one else much in the place. And we sat and we talked at the bar and these guys had a shopping bag of discs with them - and they played me Coltrane, Monk, all of the giants of Jazz who they personally witnessed perform back in the heyday in the Village. We spent hours and the world exploded for me that day in a way it rarely has - we're so locked into our perception of the world, you know? But when someone opens your eyes - and my point is - your ears and heart to something new, it's like a small rebirth.

So on that rainy afternoon, I was reminded of the many worlds my mind has painted through the fuel pouring in through my ears - and Keys is an incredible talent - good keyboardist and velvety voice and great, great phasing - could be a legend some day, if she keeps her ear to the grindstone.

But you're right: Spears. Just an empty hole indeed.

But on a more important note, is Alicia Keys freaking gorgeous or what?

Alicia Keys is stunning, I've had it for her since I first saw her. I accidentally ran into her while I was working in downtown Philly a few years ago. She is just as, if not more stunning in person. I love her voice, something about it, it's not that great Christina or Whitney voice, it has more of an edge to it.

As for Bruce, maybe he is not concerned about his status as the King of NJ Rockers, but believe me, he like every other artist is concerned about how well their CDs sell and how well their shows sell. They are smart enough to know if people don't care they can't do what they want to do. If Bruce really didn't care you would have seen another US leg of SSB tour.

By chance and TIVO, I caught a fair amount of the BRAVO broadcast.

"I was at LIVE AID ... and this was no LIVE AID." Thinking back to Mick Jagger, Tina Turner and an army of performers on stage to close LIVE AID, the Police, John Mayer and Kanye West just didn't cut it. And the BRAVO commentators had advance-warned, "Coming up, the surprise of the night!" We knew the Police were to close, so what was it to be? Ah, Mayer and West. Ok-eeeeee.

And really, this show/these shows, didn't they kind of highlight that the ... ehhh, I was going to continue and end with "has run its course," preceded by ref to a certain style of music that has been popular for a while. But I'm too conservative in these forums, I guess.

But I didn't think much of Kanye West, who we know thinks a great deal of himself.

Now, about Bon Jovi.

'Anyone else recall that Al Gore and Tipper stood up for Jon at Bobby Bandiera's Hope Concert ... and they failed to do so (despite the house standing O) for Bruce? That moment, or the lack of recognition behind it, was probably a contributing factor in Bruce's absence.

Early on, KT Tunstall from Ireland was actually a nice surprise.

I liked Madonna - but hey, I'm old.

Phil Collins's voice sounded as good as ever, so they can still do it - but they inspire me no more than when my roomates in college played Genesis Live over and over again in the 80's.

If anyone missed it, and I see it was not quoted here, Bon J ... eh, there I go again. But you have to see Bon Jovi's post-performance interview, which was actually broadcast before they broadcast the performance. "We've played this stadium many, many times. Just, what, eleven months ago, we closed our tour here for three nights. And now it's eleven months later and we have a new album out! - who knew?" It was surreal. He's not just talented; he's multi-talented. And I actually like the new song, "Lost Highway." But. And to introduce "Wanted Dead or Alive" with, "Please rise for the playing of our National Anthem." [acoustic guitars] Well, that's just un-patriotic and I'm sure even friend Al Gore winces at that.

I dig Smashing Pumpkins - but I sensed that for many acts, the sound was off, affecting the vocals. I really suspect that the on-stage monitors that the performers hear and need to here in order to stay in key and in sync, were not right.

Roger Waters seemed like a genuine highlight. The lead guitar player nails the many solos. And The Wall was really hot.

Well, you would think BRAVO would re-broadcast a great deal, so keep your eyes open. It was worth checking out as a small piece of history and for all the reaction you may have to it.

Forgot one: 'Can't not comment that, putting aside the prior performance reviews on Melissa Etheridge, ... her Bruce-inspired, hands behind her back, eyes wide to left of stadium, then to right of stadium, WAY too long opening moments on stage, punctuated by her starting it by closing her eyes and bowing her head, ... wow, surreal and just self-indulgent and uninspiring.

This reminds me of one of the most moving stories of the past two months in my personal life.

A contractor was about to quit on me - he was the key guy to finish the little project on my Mom's little house to get her home - but he was spooked when I put exactly what he said into an addendum (added page) to our little project. It wasn't anything fancy - just putting it down on paper. But he freaked - and he's a good guy.

My electrician takes me aside and says "Not for nothing - you're not going to like this but I think you should just stop being a lawyer and relax. Contractors hate to work for attorneys because you guys got to always be precise and you don't trust anyone and there's always the potential for trouble. Tell the guy what's in your heart - you just want to finish the house for your mom and you trust him." I did just that.

I ripped up the contract addendum and it's been smooth sailing ever since and I haven't felt freer about a business relationship in years (note: only do this with someone you reasonably think is cool).

So TWC, stop being an attorney! lol Who needs cites and quotations and confusing retorts?! Who needs underlines - or worse yet, corrected underlines?!

Tell us what's in your heart: you love Jon and especially his stylish clothes and high status accourtrements! lol

Well, maybe not - but shed the attorney thing and join us humans!

Humbly, The Admiral (emotionally demoted by a good Electrician)

P.S. There are subtle points to BJ Fandom? I didn't realize it existed! (wait - does that violate my self-imposed silence on her? Not really - it's the "fandom" to which I refer (see Sholtis v. American Cyanamid, 104 N.J. Super. 220 (App.Div. 1994) (and NO don't correct that cite - I know it's wrong! lol)

Wow... you're really digging here. It's not Bon Jovi's responsibility to put out a memo to the world what his song means or is known as. LOL. It has just come to be known as their national anthem... and if somebody has a problem with it maybe they should find out what he means instead of getting all pissy, LOL... because it's really not that big of a deal. It's a song. Fans love it. It is very popular... one of their most--if not the most--famous songs... hence, their national anthem. It's not a hard concept to grasp. His fans get it and if others don't, they are probably either digging for reasons to dislike him or they aren't fans... because every Bon Jovi fan I know is already well aware of what that song is known as, LOL.

It's okay to dislike Bon Jovi... but I think you should start finding better reasons to express hatred. LOL.

I know, I was kidding. Imagine how the thousands of people at the show who aren't Bon Jovi fans took it. They probably all took it the same way we did.
