Boy, sounds like they might be banking a little too much on this eventual release. The Rising sold about 2.5 million (I think) with him whoring himself out like never before in front of every camera that was rolling. The press, print & TV gave him as much promotion as he wanted. First ESB album in almost 20 years, Sep 11, it all added up to a big lovefest of media attention. All that and he still only moved 2.5. He won't be getting nearly as much press on this. Higher ticket prices (I just have a felling we will be seeing $150-$200 tickets this go around) and lack of rock & roll output the last few years has lost a % of interest & ITunes will leave him hoping to get to 1.75 million.
*** after checking it looks like The Rising moved 2 million to date. 525,000 comming on week of release.
I think he will have a problem doing 1/2 that.

I thought it was funny that they referred to "former Sony Music CEO Andy Lack" without mentioning Springsteen is a reason for the "former".

The number one factor for sales for the new album will be the lead track. If he has a Beautiful Day or American Idiot(song) in him, he could move a ton of units. Even if the rest of the album was crap. In fact, as far as album sales go, he would be better off with one great single and the rest filler, then a good overall album without a standout track to gather attention.

Why is that? Did Bruce get him fired or did Bruce's long sales decline seal his fate?

Unless he manages to tap into the pscyhe of the ennui and disassociated of the middle class (his market), he's in a bit of a dire strait. Jill premiered a song, as an example, Saturday night where she mocked a fictional girl singer dressed in black and suffering and the point of the song was Jill, being middle aged, had already "proved herself" and didn't have to do those things anymore. Catchy? ahhh - dunno. But relative and striking a chord - yeah.
I think we all expect filler - I mean - that's been the case since Tunnel, arguably. But he's choosing between projects?????? Can someone grab his lapels??????
Unless of course the other projects include Tracks II with a tour on that material......!!!!

The new news on Backstreets.com might soothe your anxiety quite a bit. Chris Phillips knows more than he's telling, but he hinting at quite a bit. I know absolutely nothing about the album itself, but I do a little about how the tour is shaping up. At least for the rest of the year. At the moment the new E Street tour looks like it's going to be modeled after The Rising Tour, with a one night-and-go format. That means at the beginning there probably won't be too many set changes, until they start multiple night stops in key cities. But that probably won't be until next year.
There are a ton of feelers out there in various cities. There have been news reports of possible dates in Minnesota and Montreal, among others. I know for a fact that the brand spanking new John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va. has been approached about various prospective dates for a possible show, but nothing is in ink yet. Hope it happens in my backyard. Great acoustics there.
But it could be another rollercoaster ride as Camp Bruce tweak all of the details for the album and tour. But make no mistake, it's going to be an E Street tour.
It's too late to stop now.

Please don't use that phrase!
Oh, and let me guess: if the tour doesn't happen, then the terrorists win!

No CDs move a ton of units anymore.
The "physical" music business is dead.
I think a way to approach it these days is to just release a song or two digitally every few weeks. It gives the fans something to constantly look forward to, and it also would help sell more tracks online if you only have to put out a dollar or two every month.

BWAHAHAHAHA
Chris Phillips doesn't know crap compared to some of the posters on these boards. He just takes his info from all of the boards just like we do except he doesn't post anything on the news page until he gets some sort of decent confirmation.
Chris Phillips has ZERO inside info from the Bruce camp. For God's sake in all the years of Backstreets magazine with Phillips at the helm he got ONE interview with Bruce.
Why?
Because Bruce was selling the Vote for Change garbage big time, he had an agenda.

His info doesn't come from Bruce, it comes from a few people around Bruce. I know for a fact that he has at least one organizational source that keeps him up-to-date on tour stuff, but I'm guessing he's got way more. Think of all of the interviews with people he's done with people around Bruce over the years
But hey, you could be right. There's one way to test this stuff. You know what's he laid out, let's see how much of it comes to pass. Like if Bruce is back down working in Atlanta a week from now. I'm sure the AJC will sneak in a mention or two, if he's down there. He's also throwing out the date, October 2nd, which may be pushing things if recording continues at the end of the month. But let's hold on to it anyway...10-02-07 in the U.S.
And let's see if the tour stuff happens with that basic setup and timeline. Maybe it won't with the way things keep getting tweaked, but I'm still willing to bet it does. October and November, one show per U.S. city and then the same for Europe for a short stint in December.

Chris is very careful about what he writes (and for good reason). I think he walks a thin line to not irk the org, but does his best on passing along info (possibly even helping create an early buzz). I also agree he gets info from very reliable (non-board) sources.

Unfortunately, you are pretty much correct. I know the last true 'Indie' record store in our area just closed up for good. Most of the second hand stores are dying (or are selling more video games & consoles than CDs). The Best Buy and Circuit City near me have moved their CD sections further towards the back of the store. It's getting harder and harder to locate cool CDs to purchase. I'm doing a lot more shopping online.
So if we 'know' that sales of the new album are not going to be off the charts, can we restrain from gnashing of teeth over the 'performance' of the record in the marketplace (and therefore Bruce's 'relevance' on the music scene), and focus instead on the quality of the record and tour (by our largely biased standards, of course  )?

Why is that? Did Bruce get him fired or did Bruce's long sales decline seal his fate?
Most reports indicated that signing Bruce to a $100 million contract without seeking the ok of the parent company sealed his fate.

Does anyone really think at this point Bruce will attract new fans? The last several albums have sold approximately 2 million copies.

I remember wringing my hands over Darkness - "wow, he's been away so long? Will anyone still be interested? Wonder if he can top Born to Run"? lol
Sit back and let the man work his magic. There's got to be some left. If there isn't, I'm going to the Maroon 5 page
