I need advice, please. Going to Europe in the fall and I want to buy a digital. I've never owned one, although I've been taking photos for pleasure and profit for many years. I own Olympus SLRs currently. I'll admit I don't know very much about digitals, so any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you! :)

Canon. Powershot.

That's all you need to know.

Do you want a pocket sized one or one that feels more like an SLR?

The two digital cameras I've been looking at are not pocket sized, but they are on the smaller end of SLR type digital cameras. FujiFilm FinePix S700 and the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. They both seem fine to me, affordable, not too big, nice features, great reviews. I prefer the Fuji one though. I've also had great experience with Fuji digital cameras, great picture quality.

I say go to a store, pick some up and handle them, some stores even have them plugged in so you can shoot some pictures in the store.

Good luck!

Does the Cannon camera have interchangeable lenses?

If you're taking a digital camera overseas, first check with customs/security to see what size camera is allowable. I've heard that things have changed lately in many places where you can't carry a large camera onboard an aircraft overseas anymore.

For a good small and relatively inexpensive digital camera for starters you might want to look into the FujiFilm or Canon models. Personally I perfer FujiFilm digital cameras.

I dont know about the Canon, but I have heard that the Fuji S700 has a threaded lens barrel so that you can fit filters onto it, but you cant change out the lens, but maybe an adapter lens would work. I dont know, Im still pointing and shooting.

I like Canons. I've had Canon point and shoot for 15 years that is still my standby fun camera. I'll check it out, and the FujiFilm one, too. Thanks, guys. :)

Anytime! :)

From what I've heard point and shoot models are allowed on aircrafts but as for other models with large lenses etc, there's a size limitation in place for many areas so do check into this if you're getting a SLR digital of any kind.

Then again, you could buy two cameras... one for taking great photos at home and a good point and shoot for overseas (or any other place you might think to be too hazardous for your more expensive SLR digital camera).

I'm considering that, Java. I think I'll try the point and shoot first. I'm still so fond of my film cameras and I have quite a bit invested in the equipment, so I'm a bit reluctant to give them up. lol

Hiya digicam folks. So, a friend of mine loaned me his little camera and I was messing around with it... here's a question. I was taking a backlit shot, and I could not figure out how to adjust the exposure. It didn't seem to want me to use the flash as fill, either. Granted, this is an older, cheap camera, so I'm thinking that newer, more expensive cameras have shutter contols and overrides just like film cameras, yes?

Nevermind. :) I just answered my own questions. Funny what a quick search can do, huh? lol
