View Full Version : State Trooper?

Does anyone else find it a little bothersome that a song like this makes its way into the encore section of a show; or any part of the show for that matter? Unless it as some kind of secretive personal favor for someone, I really don't see how it's possible.
One must ponder the question, why this song when there are so many other options (both rarely played and overplayed) that would put a smile on even the least hardcore of fans? Here then is a partial list of such songs:
Blinded, Growin, Bus Stop, Lost, For You, Spirit, Saint, E Street, Sandy, Kitty, Billy, Rosie, 57th, NY, Thunder, 10th, Meeting, Jungle, Something, Streets, Sherry, Jackson, Rocker, Johnny, Open, Fire, "C", Raise, Proof, Because, Hard, Bishop, Loose, Take Em, Bye-Bye, Pink, Quarter, Santa and Merry.
This doesn't even factor into all the many great covers he's done over the years: Gloria, Who'll, It's My Life, Cryin, Can't Help Fallin, Viva, Detroit, Travelin, etc.
So many greats to choose that would make so many so happy. And State Trooper is the one he picks? Ay Caramba! They've usually closed the consession stands by this point in the show so we really can't use a beer break now, Bruce.

I think it was connected to the Arcade Fire guests. They perform a cover of the song in their concerts.

See, you came to the right place. Ask a simple question (although the question did get a bit verbose) and you get a simple answer.
If you asked that over on BTX it would be debated for 5 pages. :p

If State Trooper is not a favorite of yours, that's fine. However, this was a highlight not only of the evening but of the tour so far. This was Bruce passing the torch to the next generation of artists who do everything they do for totally the right reasons, and they do it better than any of their contemporaries. Anybody who would have missed that to go for a beer deserves my pity.

Well, out of this group I think Santa would have been most appropriate last night.

Why NOT this song? You could ask that stupid question about any song in any given setlist. Some people will just never be happy unless Bruce consults them prior to planning his setlist.

Is that an option? If he thinks that song is appropriate when he spends the majority of the show promoting a new album, perhaps he needs to. I'm available for consultations.

35 years ago, on a night when Morrison asked Bruce to join him, you would have been the guy asking why Van is playing Gloria and who is this Springsteen punk anyway

Not the best analogy, Bob. Gloria happens o be on the better end of VM's song catalog so I doubt I would have had a problem with it. For obvious good reason, Bruce barely played State Trooper during the Nebraska songs portion of the Born in the USA tour. Maybe if he chose something last night that was a little more uplifting -- like My Fathers House, I wouldn't be as disappointed. That's sarcasm by the way.

Thanks for pointing it out. I have trouble knowing when to take any of this seriously.

You hated it when Bruce played BTR acoustic on the TOL tour didn't you?

State Trooper is a great song from a great album. He played it because he had special guests who were known for their cover. What's the problem here?
PS -- I'd pay serious money to hear Bruce do Highway Patrolman with Dar Williams. She does an awesome version.
BTW -- these videos are awesome and show EXACTLY why Bruce brought them up and played with them. and the crowd reaction from the guy with the taper tells the whole story.
So stop yr whinin'. if you don't want to go forward with bruce, go back to 30 year old boots. please.

I think you're all crackers. I loved acoustic BTR. I prefer the all band one. But I loved it all the same. As for a Brucean moment, I'm all for that. I'll take em as they come. Unless they involve two Canadian yokels that decided to cover one of his worst songs. And just for the record, I love the Nebraska album. 90% of it anyway. Can you guess which 10% I don't like? But alas I digress. I'm now really just trying to stir the pot and that wasn't the original point of the post. The point was simply that it wouldn't have been my first choice to replace Thundercrack which I've never been lucky enough to see him perform in concert. That would have bothered me; especially after all the favorable reviews I've been reading of it. If he wants to sub in State Trooper for one of the new ones, God Bless!

doggie....I sort of agree with the there could be better songs played in Thundercracks spot. It could be worse. He could throw a full band John Henry in that spot ! But I tend to look at this differently. I see a man starting to feel comfortable with his setlists that he invites friends on stage.
And this is a great sign !! And the bottom line is its his stage. I'm more interested in how the sound was last night.
Is it getting better, worse or is it the same schittiness.

The only song that should be played in Thundercrack's spot is THUNDERCRACK!

I was once at the Old Sante Fe Cafe on Main Street in Freehold when Bobby Bandiera graciously gave up the mike to a LD member (Puss in Boots) and said that he did a better Glory Days then the boss and he was dead serious!

The only songs that come to mind when someone says "why this song" are:
Big Muddy
Pony Boy
Silver Palomino
Most of the Joad Album.
But State Trooper? I'd love to hear it live.

I'd be quite boring if Bruce played the same old songs each night; I'd have been quite happy to hear State Trooper in TO last night. That is if I wasn't already completely happy with the set list we got (Incident and For You in a night was all I needed).

'Twas funny I had oldsters in the audience around me asking who Arcade Fire was, and they're big stuff up here.
Oh well, nothing like arguing over a set list.
BUT what I haven't seen mentioned here is the fact that during Thundercrack in Toronto last night Bruce forgot the chords and had Kevin Buell bring out the chord charts on a piece of paper that Bruce grabbed and put at his feet. The pitsters said it was amazing to watch Bruce stare at the chords at his feet as he jammed away with Clarence and Soozie at the song's ending.

It is easy to misunderstand the point you are trying to make when the first paragraph of your post says that any song like State Trooper doesn't belong in the setlist:
Does anyone else find it a little bothersome that a song like this makes its way into the encore section of a show; or any part of the show for that matter? Unless it as some kind of secretive personal favor for someone, I really don't see how it's possible.

I thought that Bruce's acoustic performance during the Spectrum show of the D&D tour was perhaps the best moment of the half-dozen shows I saw.
