Thanks! I use BitCommet to download torrents, but I haven't been able to find any shows on the torrent site I use. Mainly TorrentSpy, because it's been good for a few old TV shows or documentaries I wanted, but no concerts. Thanks a lot for that site :)

I'm just starting to try this myself after years of reading about it.
I have an eMac with a cable modem. Can somebody give me a sense (in layman's terms) how much memory the programs and the shows themselves eat up?
I'm not a computer guy, so forgive me if this is an impossible question to answer.

The programs are minimal. The shows are full WAV audio files, about 60-70MG per song, so about 1.3 Gigs per show. When you DL, you get flac files which are compressed, so when you uncompress, you have 2 files per song. i just looked at the philly1 folder and it was over 2gigs with both sets of files.
I download the whole show then drag the files into itunes and convert to mp3, then trash the flac and WAV files if i'm not burning for others. that's how i save space. you could also burn to CD as soon as you finish downloading and converting to save space.

Thanks, I think I'll drag them to iTunes as well. So if I'm understanding you correctly (always a dicey proposition with me), I don't need any additional programs once I've downloaded the files if I already have iTunes installed? And do I have to tell iTunes to convert to mp3 or does it do it automatically?

You need:
a bittorent client
a flac converter (for mac, try Xact)
after you dl and convert, then you've got usable wav files. you can store those in itunes, burn to disc, etc.
when you drag to itunes, if you want to save space, you have to select the songs in itunes and click 'convert to mp3' in the Advanced Menu.

I got confirmation right away. I've noticed with sites where you have to register that if it takes too long, you might just want to try again.
I tried one to download one show through Jungleland last night and after a couple of hours still wasn't connected to anyone. I'll try again tonight.

Should be pretty quick. It's sited in Italy, so if all approvals come from there, too, there might a little lag (i.e. < 12 hours).

You may have a problem. if there are seeders and peers you should connect right away. I had a problem over at dime where I was using an unsupported bittorrent client. that client worked on jungleland tho.

If you find the show you want on the BTX site I posted, then the download can be reasonably quick, since they are downloading MP3 files and not WAV files, usually zipped up with WinRAR or something.
The 10/9 CAA show was about 246 MB, including some artwork, and I downloaded the whole thing in about 10-20 minutes.
It's also a great source for individual song MP3s as well.

I guess what was confusing me was when I clicked on a show, it send me to another site and I got the impression I needed to pay a monthly fee to register. Did I get that wrong?

Its great seeing others learn how to torrent.
I would like to add 2 comments.
If you have converted your flacs into wavs.....Just burn the wavs..do not convert them into mp3s.
If you are downloading those zipped mp3s from BTX,please make a note on the cd`s that they are from a mp3 source.
MP3 sourced stuff is usually not traded.
flac>>wav>>cd is what you want and tradeable.

Last night I tried again to download 8-30-03 Giants Stadium from Jungleland. I got two different errors (bad data and something about a tracker). Perhaps the file is corrupt?
I also tried once where it seemed to load all the files very quickly, but I'm thinking those are "shells" for the data? Again, I don't have the vocabulary for this so I'm not sure if this is making any sense.
It seems like the Backstreets option might be simpler, but I don't want to pay a monthly fee to download the files if I can avoid it.

yes and also try to read the comments on the specific torrents page..sometimes it can save you the effort.
Obviously, the more seeders ,the faster your d/l will be.
And seeing as a few of you are jumping in the deep end :)
after you connect and start d/ling,please look at the leechers list for your name. If theres a red number next to your name, please read www.portforward.com how to unblock a port so you can d/l faster and share whatever you d/l.

If you dont understand something then just ask.
Several people have offered help here.
The more people we get to torrent, the better tree`s will go when they are offered.
I will help anyone setup their pc to torrent.
But you must register on dime first....And then you call me.
The whole thing will take about 15 minutes to set up !
Then after you burn your first show you will ask why you didnt do this sooner.
Then when you go to burn your second show you will be pm`ing me for my number because you forgot to take notes for burn #1 :p

Have you guys read about this...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071019/ap_on_hi_te/comcast_data_discrimination
I'll leave it up to you tech-minded folks to figure this out, but it at least implies that Comcast is putting limitations on file sharing.
I'm not in a Comcast home, so it doesn't affect me, but I guess when one company tries something, the rest could follow suit.
JAG
Oct 19th, 2007, 01:35 PM
I'm on Comcast and I noticed that my up rate was minimal compared with my down. maybe this is why (from that story):
>> Comcast subscribers can download BitTorrent files without hindrance. Only uploads of complete files are blocked or delayed by the company, as indicated by AP tests.
But with "peer-to-peer" technology, users exchange files with each other, and one person's upload is another's download. That means Comcast's blocking of certain uploads has repercussions in the global network of file sharers.
Comcast's technology kicks in, though not consistently, when one BitTorrent user attempts to share a complete file with another user.
***
There's another repercussion: you're supposed to be a good sharer -- the technology tracks your total up vs. your down, and Dime wants to see that you're upping as well as downloading. so if Comcast isn't letting me up, will i get cut off from dl'ing?

The fast answer is yes JAG. If your share ratio falls below .25 after your first 5gb of d/l you will be blocked from further d/l ing till you can raise the ratio.
As a update to the 10/18 versions out there now.
And please understand tapers have bad nights and equipment malfunction. And a big thank you goes out to every taper.
So with that said:
scoopers version has to many pops and is missing 22 secs. But damn it sounds great.
nyctaper on jungleland is so far the best.
bakerstuff just uploaded his so I cant comment till I get it.
And theres still Kathleens version.
Normally if this didnt have the setlist it does and if it wasnt in NYC , I`d stop with nyctapers version. Its that good. But I just want the best sounding one to me :)

This Comcast thing is sobering news indeed. Looks like i will be kicked out of Dime pretty soon because of it:
>> Share Ratio Enforcement [ratio of uploading to downloading]:
As long as your cumulative ratio is 0.25 or higher, you're allowed to join a torrent as a leecher. Any member of User rank or higher who has a complete copy of a torrent may join it as a seeder, regardless of ratio. Any member of Uploader rank or higher, regardless of ratio, may upload and seed a new torrent.
The SRE rules are based on an enforcement cycle. A cycle is 5.00 GB for users of Uploader rank or below, larger for VIPs. You can find out the size of your cycle on your Control Panel (or click [User CP] in the upper right of any of DIME's pages after you've logged in).
Whenever your total download reaches a multiple of your cycle size, you can't join any more torrents as a leecher unless your ratio is at least the required minimum (currently 0.25). You can raise your ratio by seeding torrents where you already have a complete copy, or by uploading and seeding new torrents of your own. Once your ratio is high enough, you can enter a torrent as a leecher again, at least until your total download gets to the next multiple of your cycle size.
****
For those wondering what this means: a leacher is someone with an incomplete copy of a file who is sucking down the file. when you do that, you're also uploading at the same time. a seeder is some with a complete file who's putting it out there for others.

The BTX option is definitely simpler and you don't have to pay any monthly fees. What happens is that the link directs you to a site like megaupload.com, where you have the choice of paying the montly premium, or waiting 45 seconds for the freebie (which is not that big of a deal as far as I'm concerned). The other drawback with the freebie is that you get timed out -- only a certain number of downloads per day, after I downloaded CAA I tried a single song, I was told I had to wait 311 minutes to download again. Again, no big deal, I just went back the next night and got the song.
Bigger drawback as Mickey said is that these are MP3s, not WAV or anything so you have to be really clear about it for trading purposes. But it sounds great on the IPOD!!!!

Thanks - I just completed my first download (last night's show from MSG) from the Jungleland site and it went well but I think it was because everyone and his mother is downloading it which made it lightning quick. I'm going to try the Backstreets option too - I'm not sure if I'd be able to tell the difference between WAV and MP3 anyway.

I cant tell the difference but some people can and people who trade (like it was their last breath) frown upon mp3 sourced material.
Yes.To share a show, keep the pc on and your torrent software open after the d/l is complete.

I contacted DIME and got the following info about the Comcast problem:
>> Options:
1. Change your ISP.
2. Use a client which allows protocol encryption, such as Azureus.
3. Limit your download speed in your client so it is less than your upload speed -- because as long as you are downloading, you can upload.
4. Join rather new torrents with a lot of peers -- there your chances to share are better than with old torrents with very few peers.
5. http://wiki.dimeadozen.org/index.php/DimeFAQ:Frequently_Asked_Questions#sandvine
Re #2 -- it appears that there are bittorrent clients that mask the program you're using so Comcast or whoever doesn't block your access. They make a move, we make a move... spy v. spy...
Anyway -- in thinking about, i'm not really downloading to trade anyway, i just want to load to my ipod, so maybe the mp3 DLs are a better way to go anyway.
