So I finally started to look at Grad Schools and I am currently considering enrolling in a Masters in Social Work/Law dual degree program.

At the University of Michigan.

My brother has been encouraging me to get my MSW from there, not only because he loves the place but also because they've had the #1 Social Work School in the country for 13 years running. So, after he was nice enough to do some research for me, I looked at the website and discovered the dual degree program. It really does seem like a good fit since I need a Masters in Social Work and have always wanted a Law Degree.

Right now I'm just trying to decide if I want to subject myself to the torture that would come with getting two degrees at the same time.

Lanie, you're just telling yourself it's about the dual degrees.

It's all about Michigan, and you damned well know it!

LOL! A little bit...but I've actually um....started to enjoy watching their games.

Seriously though, I think Law School might just take what's left of my sanity.

You only enjoy it when they lose.

Either that, or you've become a traitor to OSU. :greyno:

I was actually rooting for Penn State yesterday, you know. Not that I actually thought they would win, but I was rooting for them. I think that's because Ohio State really hadn't played any high quality opponents yet, so I don't think they should be #1.

Come to think of it, NOBODY should be #1.

That's exactly what my brother said...they haven't played any high-caliber teams so they aren't worthy of the ranking. Time will tell if they can escape the season unscathed. If they get to the National Championship game I only hope they don't choke like they did last year. *shudder* I still have nightmares about that.

It sure has been a heck of year in college football.

It's almost been a bad thing to be ranked. :o

And I love how WVU didn't move up in the rankings today!

I thought you didnt want to be int he snow anymore?? I believe Michigan has some of the worst snow in the country.

Doing a duel degree with law is really crappy because not only do you have to take the GRE and whatever requirements that go along with your first degree, you must take the lsat and take care of all the requirements for the law program also. this Usually means separate letters of rec, and personal statements.

good luck with that.

I don't want to be in snow anymore, but my brother said...if I put up with snow for a few more years I can go work in Hawaii or somewhere without snow for the rest of my life.

And suprisingly, Michigan doesn't require the GRE (I'm surprised at how many schools don't). The LSAT (and getting extended time for it) would be hard, though.

Nothing is definite yet so we'll see what happens. But this would give my parents an excuse to move to Ann Arbor. LOL

Why do you need extended time for the LSAT? I don't think they give that.

Every school I have looked into requires the GRE except one, and that was solely because I was looking into a duel program. Rude.

I use extended time because I write slow. And, sometimes my reaction time can be slow using a computer. All side effects of the CP. In high school I had an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) that mandated extra time so I've qualified for it ever since.

I think the LSAT gives extra time you just have to fight tooth and nail for it. Not looking forward to that one

You do not use a computer for the lsat. its fill in the bubble for 101 questions then write 30 minutes for your short essay. Every essay format is the same, you are given a situation and pros and cons on each side, and then you pick a side and argue it. Simple as pie.

I really dont think they give extra time because anyone could do better on these tests if given extra time I have looked everywhere on their site and I haven't seen anything. if it was possible I would attempt to get more time due to my extreme text anxiety, but I think you are just SOL if you cant get what you need done in the 35 minutes per section allowed.

Hmmm...

I'll have to ask my roommate if she's heard any updates on this. I think she knew some people who were blind that were fighting for extra time. I thought there was a lawsuit or something but I don't remember

Here ya go Sparks, I'm not sure if you'd qualify for accomodations but here's a link:

Hm. I am sure I wont because just because I have bad anxiety and read slow doesn't make me special needs to most people, especially law people. they would just say then dont go to law school because it will be harder blah blah blah.

I think that people who are blind, or deaf or whatever surely get whatever they need. but simply because you do something slow, I am sure will not constitute extra time...and if it does...then it's really unfair to others who do not have a documented handicap but are just generally work slower than others.

Dual degree programs are awesome, you are right... it does suck when it comes to essays and requirements. I looked into that for my stuff. I still wanna do it, just sayin'.

Yeah, not looking forward to the application process. My brother had to write 3 essays just for his undergrad application, I can only imagine how much more detailed it is for the Grad School.

And knowing the way I write, it'll take me till I'm 30 just to get my personal statements done

SparkleHugs
Oct 30th, 2007, 09:57 AM
Hopefully for your sake they wont be that long because grad schools dont want a biography. lol

I can see needing three essays, the personal statement, a writing sample, and an addenda if you need to clarify anything.

Sparks, Lanie writes slowly because of her handicap, so she should qualify for any and all accommodations available.

Can I get you to tell that to the LSAT people?

I've heard horror stories about how very un-accomodating they are.

SparkleHugs

So i would imagine they would give you extra time for the one essay portion and the customary 35 minutes for the fill in the bubble time. The lsat people are very strict with what they allow and do not allow.

as of June this year, they no longer allow mechanical pencils, purses, or anything else that doenst include a #2 pencil.

uh I would imagine if she has a legit handicap (which she does) and it takes her a significant amount of time to accomplish writing things (which it seems like it might) that there might be something that they can do to accomodate that

seriously enough being rude about it

SparkleHugs
Oct 30th, 2007, 09:18 PM
I am not being rude at all, I just know how this test can be. She herself said that they can be very un-accomodating

Lanie, I am sorry if I came across as though you do not have a legitimate handicap, I just wanted you to prepared if they give you a hard time. I didn't mean to be come across rude or disrespectful at all.

No mechanical pencils! Gah!! I haven't used a real #2 pencil in years.

I qualified for extended time for all tests in college, but the only time it really took me longer than the allotted class time was for essay/short answer or math tests.

So, if I do indeed end up taking the LSAT I'm gonna apply for extra time. If I don't get it I'll find a way to deal. I've done it before I'll do it again. Like I tell my Mom "Life wasn't made to made to be handicapped acessible...you just gotta find ways to handle the things that give you trouble"

I thought she was just being Spark-ish. :p

Yeah when I took the GRE you couldn't take anything in with you. They provided you with pencils so you couldn't even bring those in.

And you weren't allowed to take off any clothing. I can see not letting you carry in a sweater or something, but once you're already in the room and have been examined, you weren't allowed to remove any layers if you wanted.

SparkleHugs

That is ridiculous. I don't think these tests are exactly anything you can cheat on.

I am curious when the lsat will become computerized. I prefer the paper test way myself.
