View Full Version : Silly question from what may be a stupid idea

For the first time ever, I'm likely to spend my Thanksgiving away from family. I am therefore thinking about cooking my first turkey, and I'm not talking about just a piece of breats. I'm talking the whole deal, stuffing and all, and bringing most of the bird into work.
So the question is, what is the smallest size turkey anyone has ever heard of where cooking is concerned?

Oh my! The first time my family came to my place for Thanksgiving I had no idea what I was doing. I had the turkey and apparently you're supposed to shove your hand into its rear and pull stuff out. Well, I thought I got it all, and I thought I was ready to put the turkey in the oven, so I did, but thankfully my older sister showed up just in time and pulled the turkey back out and finished pulling nasty stuff out of its rear. The turkey turned out fine.
I never made a turkey for Thanksgiving since then. If I do, I go with just a turkey breast and a small ham. Its easier, quicker and you can focus on other foods and the family social gathering.
Never will I ever try to make a turkey again. :nc:

It's turkey or bust!
I won't forget to pull the stuff out. Back home getting the stuff out and coooking it all separately was as yummy as the dinner itself. The neck and liver... Mmmm!

You don't know the best part of Thanksgiving.
I left off the part of loving the tail, too.

Well, I bought my bird, so I guess I'm committed.
I got a 12 pounder. I saw an eight pounder, but that didn't look like it could even feed my dog. As I was buying it, the kid bagging my food got all nervous because my bird was soft. Apparently, he never heard of a fresh turkey instead of frozen.
I managed to forget one item... Doesn't that always suck? It's not so much that I forgot the item, but as I'm baking cookies as well, I didn't factor in for needing extra butter than what I already had at home.

Success!
It came out fine, as did the stuffing. The gravy looked runny, but tasted fine.
I hope everyone had an excellent Turkey Day!

Dave, that turkey looks yummy!!!
I don't think turkeys are really that hard to do. It's a lot of mess, but once you get it into the oven, your meal is basically done, and you can relax (and enjoy the aroma) for a few hours.
My Dad always liked the tail, too. Mom used to call it the "hind part over the fence" for some reason.
