Rudy Giuliani remains the top contender in the national race for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in the United States, according to a poll by Zogby International released by Reuters. 29 per cent of respondents would vote for the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.
Actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson is second with 15 per cent, followed by former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee with 11 per cent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with nine per cent, and Arizona senator John McCain also with nine per cent. Support is lower for Texas congressman Ron Paul and California congressman Duncan Hunter.
On Nov. 21, Romney discussed the war in Iraq, saying, "Congress authorized going into Iraq, and they had as much information as they needed to make that authorization. The surge is working, and we’re seeing the Sunnis get rid of the bad guys there. Our forces are getting rid of al-Qaeda. And not only is it working, but we’re seeing a resurgence of confidence in our own troops to get the job done there."
