What do you think about this? There's a discussion about the topic in another forum, but I wanted to bring it here. Do you believe that a "one-union" concept between the US, Mexico and Canada, much like the European Union, is a good idea?
Here's a link to the group working to promote it. Read the "Myths vs Facts" links. Very interesting stuff there.

I don't know.....do we have to let all them dirty Mexicans in if we do this?
For the record, I'm being sarcastic. I know, that must come as a shock to all of you, that I, of all people, would be sarcastic. :p

And, wow, there are some really paranoid conspiracy nuts on the BSB board.

That's why I brought the topic here. I haven't followed too much about this, but I didn't want to get into another grassy knoll debate.
The Security and Prosperity Partnership Of North America (SPP) is a legit deal, no doubt about that, but amidst all the bureauspin, I'm finding it a bit difficult to figure out what Bush, et al, really are trying to do.
This is from the site, a piece titled, "SPP Backgroud:"
The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) was launched in March of 2005 as a trilateral effort to increase security and enhance prosperity among the United States, Canada and Mexico through greater cooperation and information sharing.
This trilateral initiative is premised on our security and our economic prosperity being mutually reinforcing. The SPP recognizes that our three great nations are bound by a shared belief in freedom, economic opportunity, and strong democratic institutions.
The SPP provides the framework to ensure that North America is the safest and best place to live and do business. It includes ambitious security and prosperity programs to keep our borders closed to terrorism yet open to trade.
The SPP builds upon, but is separate from, our long-standing trade and economic relationships. It energizes other aspects of our cooperative relations, such as the protection of our environment, our food supply, and our public health.

Like the bare bones way you describe it DES, but when I look at the fact sheet, I get a totally different view of it.
An NAU as it could be considered I think would be good in the long run, although I get the feeling the U.S. might suffer a little at first (the dollar still be the stronger, if weakening still, currency). Also, I don't know how well the Mexican population will survive at first: When the EU went into effect, people in many countries found themselves paying more for everyday products. Considering the wage/wealth disparity between Mexico and the other NA countries, the change in currency and in prices could be a serious shock. I don't think any of the EU countries were as near the poverty line then as Mexico is now.
Reading the fact sheet though makes me more skeptical... Is this only to protect ourselves from Rollllllex watches? It seems like overkill if that's the real reason they want this passed.
What't the link to the BSB thread? Sounds like it may be worth a chuckle.

My gut reaction is to say a very strong NO! However, I have no information on the pro's or con's if this were to happen so its hard to make an educated opinion on the matter.

Better information sharing might be a good thing.....didn't some of the 9/11 hijackers enter through Canada?
But I don't see the financial interests in this country allowing a merger similar to the EU any time soon.

I think having the Canada and US economies may be beneficial. And I think Mexico, which can use a boost the most, will benefit.
