Several of music's biggest names came together in L.A. this past weekend to celebrate their favorite musical moments in cinema. 'Movies Rock,' which was taped for broadcast to air on CBS Friday, December 7, kicked off with Beyonce earning a standing ovation for her rendition of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.'
Beyonce, along with Carrie Underwood, who performed the title song from 'The Sound of Music,' was one of the pre-show favorites. Nikki Sixx and Alicia Silverstone, who also tabbed Jennifer Hudson, pegged them as the two artists they were most excited to see.
The two-hour broadcast, which included presenters Harrison Ford, J.Lo, Kate Hudson, Danny DeVito and Quentin Tarantino, among others, offered plenty of highlights. Among them: Fergie rocking 'Live and Let Die' from the Bond film of the same name, Mary J. Blige and John Legend teaming up for the timeless 'As Time Goes By' from 'Casablanca,' Chris Brown paying homage to the King with 'Jailhouse Rock,' and will.i.am leading Busta Rhymes, L.L. Cool J and Eve in the 'Theme From Shaft.'
"When you put music and acting together, we all get a little excited because we have a mutual respect for each other," Fergie said before the event. "I just have a huge respect for actors and filmmakers. I really think they have the same respect for us because the music sets the tone of a movie. It could either make it corny and cheesy, or it can make it intense and be that right moment that gives you goose bumps."
Blige looked forward to showing a different side of her talents. "I'm going to do it a little smoother and a little more urban than what it would normally be done," she said. "It brings out my jazz thing. Then I have this standard thing that comes out -- this voice that people never really heard from me. It helps you to come out of your comfort zone."
Nicole Scherzinger, who had the honor of recreating 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend,' a song made famous by Marilyn Monroe in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,' said her performance was indicative of how times have changed. "I wouldn't have picked it for myself because it's Marilyn Monroe," she said. "But I'm like, 'You know what? It's a new day and age, and there's Hawaiian, Russian, Filipino Marilyn Monroe's out there. That's me.'"
