Iraq films barely a blip on Oscar radar

Who didn't make it to the nominations list

In a wide-open year, there were lots of possibilities and few certainties. Many names seemed likely contenders, in a variety of categories, but with Oscar, somebody's got to come in sixth.

An entire subgenre was pretty much shut out: Aside from Tommy Lee Jones' surprise nom for "In the Valley of Elah" and Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Charlie Wilson's War," the slate of Mideast-topical movies were ignored by Academy voters. That list includes "Rendition," "Lions for Lambs," "A Mighty Heart," "The Kingdom" and "Redacted."

In other matters, Sean Penn was the only Directors Guild nominee not to receive Oscar attention (Jason Reitman took his slot). Penn and James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac") were also Writers Guild nominees but were MIA Tuesday.

Joe Wright, of "Atonement," saw his film reap seven noms, including best pic, but none for him as helmer. Tim Burton ("Sweeney Todd") and Sidney Lumet ("Before the Devil Knows You're Dead") had also been helming hopefuls.

Obviously, that means the war is justified.

Can you say "Wag the Dog?"

To be honest, I don't need to watch any films about the war to know it was completely unjust.

Anyway, they would tend to be a bit depressing, cinema is usually about escapism for me.

Why do you keep bringing these films up? None that I recall were even considered as an Oscar contender in any of the categories.

You have to think in Brad logic to understand this thread:

If people aren't seeing anti-war films, he believes that's because they aren't anti-war.

Therefore, if people don't see anti-war films, they are pro-war.

I'm anti-war and haven't seen any of those. Hell, I didn't even know most of those films were released or what they were. I knew what A Mighty Heart was, and that's it.
