Exactly how does it work? How is the tax figured?
I've always noticed the stickers on the gas pumps stating that tax is a certain percantage. And in WV that cost is automatically factored into the total price. Well today I noticed a new sticker. It broke it down for us and I was shocked. I cant remember the exact numbers, but it was like 18 cents federal and 32 cents state on the gallon!!! So in WV we are paying about 51 cents on the gallon for tax!!!!! So today when I filled up at $3.19 a gallon, if you subtract the tax, it would have been $2.68?!?!

Yep, that's the tradeoff for having paved roads, building freeways, traffic signals, highways signs and street lights.
There's a temptation to say "we don't need that stuff" but yeah, we do. Food and everything in stores wouldn't get there if trucks couldn't use modern highways.

But, if it werent for those things we would not need gasoline. Its not as though gasoline was around long before roads or signs. You know, in many parts of WV there are no paved roads, only dirt roads, gravel roads, muddy roads, and no signs or lights.

But where does that 2.68 go? That is still an unreasonable amount for gas...it just doesnt seem like it because I paid 3.53 today and you probably did too.

I think our gas tax in WV is outrageous! We are a very rural state.

Just a quick interesting fact, and y'all can look it up too if you want, West Virginia is 75% forest.
Now, tell me we need to be one of the highest taxed states when it comes to gasoline.

According to the Charleston Daily Mail, West Virginia has the nation's sixth-largest system of state-maintained roads, and the State Road Fund is not able to keep up with highway maintenance costs, thus the hikes in gas taxes.
But it appears that the state legislature is clearing the way for more private construction and maintenance of highways, so that may help dial down the taxes, but you'll be seeing more toll booths and possibly higher tolls to make up for it.

Have you drove the WV Turnpike recently? Its a mess. The toll has been increased and the excuse is to keep the road maintained, however, the job is not getting done. The road has been a mess for quite sometime, and the complaints keep coming.
I have a feeling a lot of money is being pocketed.
So I guess either way we will be robbed of our hard earned money.

The bridge is the largest project West Virginia has let in one total contract costing around $120 million, Murphy said.
