…about the studio version of Thunder Road, is that it should have a solid ending, not a fadeout. Otherwise, it’s a perfect song.
…about Nebraska is the recording quality.
…about the shows on the latest tour, is they are not longer.
…about the setlists on the current tour, is they are not written by me.
…about this board is the occasional childish bickering and name-calling.
…about the “Fake Band” is that some dynamite musicians didn’t get the credit they deserved, because they weren’t the E-Street Band.
.
…about the E Street Band is that they probably won’t ever play in my backyard (although I’m holding out hope).
…about the live shows in general, is that I can’t afford the time or money to go to every freakin’ one of them.
…about being a Springsteen fan is that I wasn’t one early enough, and have never seen him in a bar band setting.
…about seeing a live show, is that I will never replicate the pure joy and wonderment of seeing my FIRST live show.
…about telling someone about a show, is that they will never “get it” unless they see it, and maybe not even then.
…about never learning to play the guitar, is that I’ll never get to be a guest onstage, ripping through a solo and sharing a mike with Springsteen, just for grins.
…about Springsteen himself is that I won’t look that good at 58.
…about Danny is that he got cancer and passed. God bless him, please.

I agree with all your points especially the one about friends who just don't understand why ? I would want to go all the to paris ( 3 times) to see him live just ecause i couldn't get in to the indoor show's in london (rising, magic tours) and then go to see him at crystal palace (rising outdoor leg) and don't get his music either .
sorry but have to disagree with your Nebraska comment it came out just when i was having a few personal problems and just seemed to sum up my feelings at that time (probably why it's my favourite Album )
only bruce seems to be able to do that with music for me anyway

I disagree with the Thunder Road comment...the fadeout fits it perfectly. It leaves it open ended for you to figure out for yourself what happened to the characters when they got in the car and drove off.

glad you're sticking around
…about being a Springsteen fan is that I wasn’t one early enough, and have never seen him in a bar band setting.....
...concur. I became a fan in 78, but had to wait two years to see the band---then another 5 months due to a postponement!
…about Nebraska is the recording quality. You do know the story about that I bet: (but you can still gripe):)
from the Dave Marsh book:
"...I told Mike Batlan, the guy that does my guitars, 'Mike, go get a tape player so I can record these songs.' I figured what takes me so long in the studio is not having the songs wntten. So I said, I'm gonna write 'em and I'm gonna tape 'em. If I can make 'em sound good with just me, then I know they'll be fine...
"....So this time I got a little Teac 4-track cassette machine and I said, "I'm gonna record these songs and if they sound good with just me doing 'em, then I'll teach 'em to the band." I could sing and play the guitar, and then I had two tracks to do something else, like overdub a guitar or add a harmony. It was just gonna be a demo. Then I had an old beat-up Echoplex that I mixed through, and that was all. It was real old, which was why the sound was kinda deep." An old Panasonic boom box acted as the mix-down deck.
"And so, that was the idea. I got this little cassette recorder, plugged it in, turned it on, and the first song I did was 'Nebraska.' I just kinda sat there; you can hear the chafr creaking on 'Highway Patrolman' in particular. I RECORDED THEM IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. Some songs I only did once, like 'Highway Patrolman.' THE OTHER SONGS I DID MAYBE TWO TIMES, THREE TIMES AT THE MOST."
"I put the tape in my pocket, carried it around a couple of weeks, 'cause I was gonna teach the songs to the band. After a couple of days, I looked at the thing and said, 'Uh oh, I'd better stop carrying this around like this. Can somebody make a copy of this?'"
It was during the E Street Band sessions in March or early April 1982 that it became apparent to Springsteen that a majority of these 17 songs did not lend themselves well to a full band arrangement. According to Toby Scott it was in April 1982 that Bruce handed him the original solo demo tape and said “there’s something about the atmosphere on this tape – can’t we just master off this tape?” In effect Bruce was asking Scott if it was possible to make the sound quality good enough to release some of the 17 songs as a solo album.
It took Scott a few weeks to get back to Bruce with a definitive answer. If Scott’s answer had been “no” then there is unlikely to have ever been a Nebraska LP. However Scott said “yes”, so by late May it had been decided to issue the album, ahead of the still-in-progress E Street Band album. The title for the album was narrowed down to three choices “OPEN ALL NIGHT”, “JANUARY 3, 1982” and the ultimate winner, “NEBRASKA”.

Shouldn't it be "Gripes"?
No, "gripe" is correct because it is meant to start each sentence and each sentence is about an entirely different topic.
Great thread!

Great post, on all counts. When my kids "discovered" Bruce they used to play the Anthology video over and over. What an absolutely perfect song and ending. My kids used to imitate Bruce's movements culminating in the long slide. Anyway, I must have seen and heard that version of TR (to the exclusion of others) about a hundred times in that period.
The next time I heard it on the BTR album, I thought to myself WTF??? I've been robbed! How could they not have gotten this right?

You said it!
I watched some Darkness tour clips on YouTube over the weekend. Time stops for no one, but if we could only travel back to some of those 77-81 shows.:sunny:

So each topic is a different 'gripe' hence 'gripes'

I agree with Mr nut, the fadeout on Thunder Road is perfect. Nice choice. BTW, you ever hear the outtakes of Jungleland or BTR where the strings are REALLy loud and cheesy? I'm glad he took all that extra time mixing, cause if he left it like that it woul dhave been a disaster.
I had a great time at my first show but I can barely remember it, so I disagree with the thing about not replicating the eneregy of the first time.
And please don't even TALK about changing Nebraska. It's pretty much one of the bestest, most purest, awesomeist things in the world today. Gonna go home and put on the vinyl tonight and listen to the wind blow.
Then again, I have a whole other list of gripes.

I disagree with your disagreement! First of all, we don't even know if Mary ever did get in the car and drive off. The song is all about the invitation, it never really says whether or not she took it. But the reason I don't like the fadeout is that it loses the power of the saxophone. The sax and guitar coming to a close together would be more perfect.:music:
