View Full Version : Moping Music

So I've been a little mopey (mopy? mopey? mopy? eh.) lately . . . . Been listening to a lot of "I'm sad and pathetic music" like the Smiths. I was discussing mope music with a pal recently and she suggested that Chicago and Air Supply are, in fact, some of the best moping music around. I think I'd have to agree. Nothing like Hard Habit to Break to send you on a good crying jab. (Damn that Peter Cetera!)

Anyway, so what's your favorite moping music? What do you put on to help you wallow in self-pity?

By contrast, what music do you put on to bring your spirits back up? Beastie Boys and Squeeze, Duran Duran, and, yes, NSYNC always make me happy. :)

Chicago is THE best moping music. I find Journey to be alright for moping too.

I usually lean towards classical for mopey music. A fugue or a second movement to any symphony works. The best are when the strings sound like they're in pain...but I rarely get in an extended mopey mood. Some classic country is also good. Your wife running off and taking your dog kind of stuff.

Happy music is salsa music by Celia Cruz or some funky sampling from Fatboy Slim. Or old school R&B.

Journey is good, especially "Open Arms".

Right now "How Did I Fall in Love with You" by BSB is pretty great too. I'm sure I won't get much agreement on that one, but I cry almost every time.

When I want to wallow I always put on the Counting Crows, Jann Arden, Sarah McLachlan.

Music that makes me happier is NSYNC, anything R&B, Janet Jackson, Maxwell.

I'm SUCH a girl...I tend to put Tori Amos on. Her anger soothes me when I realize I'm never nearly as angry as she is.

NSYNC only works if I want to get out of my mopiness. If I like to wallow, it's Tori or a few MB20 songs...Toad the Wet Sprockett works well too...

Hard Habit to Break & All Out of Love by the aforementioned depression gurus.

and All Cried Out by Allure.

Put your Air Supply and Chicago CDs on the ground and step away from the repeat button.

I cry at How Did I Fall In Love With You too PB. :(

I had forgotten about Toad the Wet Sprocket, they are good to wallow. As well as the Gin Blossoms. Hey Jealousy.

When I want to get out of a mopey/bad mood, anything fast works for me...pretty much any dance music will work. Or the Rolling Stones.

Another wallowing...Big Head Todd and the Monsters - love them for their name alone! ;)

Good grief! Whatever happened to the Gin Blossoms? I remember a friend in college turning me on to them.

iggy
Feb 6th, 2001, 11:40 AM
Did they sing Good Things? Who sang Good Things? Great song.

NikDC
Feb 6th, 2001, 11:43 AM
Fine Young Cannibals.

Actually that was Good Thing. Perhaps you mean the Bodeans' Good Things.

I could not stand FYC (how cool am I?). The lead singer's voice (can't remember name) drove me crazy. Which is ironic because that was another of their hits.

iggy
Feb 6th, 2001, 11:46 AM
Yes yes yes. The Bodeans. That's not a bad song to have in your head.

Roland Gift.

That's it. And he was in the movie Scandal with Joanne Whalley(sp?.

Here lately every single song that says anything about love makes me cry. Crazy by K-Ci and JoJo kills me everytime.

I dread next Wednesday. I might just have to lay up drunk somewhere all day long.

Ah, poor ky . . . .

Whoever mentioned Journey, that's an excellent one. Open Arms is just gut wrenchingly sad . . . .

Well, now that I've dragged you all down with me into the mopies and got you all thoroughly depressed, think I'll go back to work. ;)

Forgot All By Myself by whomever it was that did it originally.

Short Chris
Feb 7th, 2001, 06:14 AM
Eric Carmen sang "All By Myself". He also sang "Please, Go All The Way" when he was in the Raspberries. Pretty much sums up the entirety of human existence, doesn't it?

Don't know why this popped into my head:

"It's Raining...on Prom Night"

vester
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:19 AM
Who sang that?

iggy
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:32 AM
I think it's from Grease.

pen&kev
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:34 AM
Throw on Hootie & The Blowfish's latest cd - it starts off mopey but ends rockin'! PB&K, that song rips me every time I hear it too.

Others? Richard Marx, Jewel, Martina McBride, & strangely Yanni will do the trick.

MerrySunshine
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:37 AM
"It's raining on prom night, my hair is such a me-hess . . .."

It is from Grease. While we're on the subject of Grease how about Hopelessly Devoted to You and that Stranded at the Drive-In song and There are Worse Things I Could Do . . . . Man, if it weren't for We Go Together and Greased Lightening, that movie would be such a downer.

MerrySunshine
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:40 AM
I think Yanni would just sink me right into a beer and a bottle of valium . . . . He frightens me almost as much as polka music.

vester
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:42 AM
I love that song There Are Worse Things I Could Do. The Stockard Channing version.

MerrySunshine
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:47 AM
Stockard Channing is awesome.

iggy
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:52 AM
Rizzo was already 50 in the movie...but Stockard Channing is cool. Go see Six Degrees of Separation, if you haven't.

Jewel is perfect for mopey music...it makes you want to put on a turtleneck and write poetry. Snap snap snap.

I have never been able to watch Grease in its entirety. Every single time I try to watch it someone feels the need to sing every single song and recite every single line along with the cast. It drives me nuts and I have to leave the room. I guess sometime I'm just gonna have to rent it and watch it alone.

MerrySunshine
Feb 7th, 2001, 07:57 AM
Six Degrees of Separation is a great movie. Not a bad job by Will Smith in that film either . . . of course it's not Men in Black or Wild Wild West . . . . ;)

iggy
Feb 7th, 2001, 08:00 AM
I hate Will Smith movies where he's chasing or shooting at people or things. Weak.

I've only seen Grease once, but enough to sing Summer Night with Nikki a la karaoke style.

vester
Feb 7th, 2001, 08:02 AM
Stockard Channing is awesome. She has been great in The West Wing but haven't seen her on it lately. I think she's doing a play.

You must see Grease in its entirety. I have had that happen to me where someone is either singing/talking along with the dialogue. Or saying it before it comes on the screen. Kill them, bury them in the backyard and go back to the movie. Maybe make some popcorn while you're up.

MerrySunshine

I've always felt that Will Smith's song Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It has a sort of subtle, melancholy undertone, which always makes me listless and emotional. [sniff] ;)

sunshinegirl

I'm not a huge Grease fan, but I must agree that Stockard Channing is awesome. Love her on the West Wing.

Wild, Wild West is one of the worst movies I've ever seen

NikDC

Love Grease.

Love Will Smith.

I seriously just told someone I had four vowels in a row at the end of my last name. They pointed out to me I didn't. I'm officially a moron. Going back to sitting quietly now....

Why does everyone love Will Smith so much? He's like the Michael Jordan of Hollywood.

He and his wife had a tacky looking wedding.

sunshinegirl
Feb 7th, 2001, 09:34 AM
Because he's adorable.

Poor Nikki...it's been a rough week...

vester
Feb 7th, 2001, 09:38 AM
I don't know why I like Will Smith so much, he's just so ... likeable! I also like his wife, Jada. Again, unsure why. It's strange because generally celebrity couples make me want to puke, except for Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson. Way high up on the puke-a-tron scale is:

John Travolta & Kelly Preston
Angelina Jolie & Billy-Bob/her brother
Steven Spielberg & Kate Capeshaw where her lot is life is to gaze adorlingly at him at all times. Let's face it, she knows where her bread is buttered.

Why was the Smith/Pinkett wedding so tacky? And be as descriptive as possibly, I love tacky weddings!

sunshinegirl
Feb 7th, 2001, 09:41 AM
I don't like Tom Hanks.

Actually scratch that. I don't like the movies Tom Hanks does. I am one of the few people in the world that HATED Forrest Gump. Couldn't stand Sleepless in Seattle either...have no desire to see Castaway...

MerrySunshine
Feb 7th, 2001, 09:51 AM
I wasn't much for Forrest Gump myself. Thought it was way overrated and Robin Wright Penn . . . I just kept thinking "Princess Bride" when I looked at her. But the rest of Tom I like just fine . . . esp. his old sit-com with Peter Scolari, Bosom (sp?) Buddies. Kip and Henry.

sunshinegirl
Feb 7th, 2001, 09:56 AM
WAY overrated.

I liked Bosom Buddies. And I liked Apollo 13. Aside from that, I'm not a big fan.

Speaking of celebrity couples...

What's up with Tom and Nicole?

Now there's a celebrity couple that I really liked.

NikDC

Love Tom.

Loved Bosom Buddies. Buffy and Hildegard.

sunshinegirl
Feb 7th, 2001, 10:02 AM
Nicole's a prima donna and Tom's gay. Not too much mystery there. I still feel bad about it though.

Now Tom Cruise's movies are a totally different story. He can do no wrong in my eyes...well except for "Eyes Wide Shut"...

I haven't seen Eyes Wide Shut.

I love Tom.

Don't say he's gay.

I heard Tom's scientology came between them..Nicole's still a Catholic girl.

What is scientology anyway?

sunshinegirl
Feb 7th, 2001, 10:16 AM
I love Tom too...I'm sorry ISOJ, I know it's painful. I think I need a Tom Movie-Marathon sometime soon...

I have no idea what scientology actually IS.

PB&Kev
Feb 7th, 2001, 10:37 AM
Hated, hated, hated Forrest Gump.

Back to the original topic: On the radio right now---Ain't Missin' You. It's 80's and it's mopy.

As you were. :D

iggy
Feb 7th, 2001, 10:51 AM
Forrest Gump is the only movie that I didn't look at my watch somewhere in the middle...including the latest Star Wars. Thought it was incredible. The kid that sees dead people was in it too.

ISOJ: you are the first person to point out that a celebrity is gay, why the certitude about Tom's straightness?

People like Will and Jada because they're safe and approachable. If DMX married Sister Soulja, they wouldn't be as popular.

sunshinegirl
Feb 7th, 2001, 10:59 AM
DMX is approachable...

If the kid would have seen dead people in Forrest Gump, maybe I would have enjoyed it more. I actually fell asleep in the movie theater but I've been forced to see it on more than one occasion since then. The catch-phrases of that movie were predictable and Tom Hanks was annoying.

Bix,threetwosandaBBQ
Feb 7th, 2001, 11:01 AM
This thread has a topic? :p

..best moping music, for me, would have to be Smashing Pumpkins. Also would be my pick-me-up of choice, but then again, radio aside, they're about all I listen anymore..

iggy
Feb 7th, 2001, 11:03 AM
Bix, aren't you contractually obligated to say that Christina Aguilera is your pick me up music?

pen&kev

I used to be a huge Tom Cruise fan, but after Days of Thunder he got too full of himself.

Pssst. He's definately a closet pillow biter!

Love Tom. Nicole, not so much.

I refuse to listen to anything saying Tom is gay. Until he comes out and says he is, I'll remain in my happy place in the Land of Denial.

For the record, I also loved Forrest Gump and everything about it. One of my all-time favourite movies. Sleepless in Seattle too.

I always enjoyed Tom Hanks even when he wasn't making Academy Award winning performances.I remeber watching "Bosom Buddies" all the time.Does anyone remember "Bachelor Party" or "The Man With One Red Shoe"..oh Yeah.."Turner and Hooch".

I loved Will Smith on "The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air"too.I never really watched it when it first came out but watch the reruns now.
