Brilliant remark. McCain has a real genius working for him.

A top adviser to Sen. John McCain said that a terrorist attack in the United States would be a political benefit to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, a comment that was immediately disputed by the candidate and denounced by his Democratic rival.

Charlie Black, one of McCain's most senior political advisers, said in an interview with Fortune magazine that a fresh terrorist attack "certainly would be a big advantage to him." He also said that the December assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, while "unfortunate," helped McCain win the Republican primary by focusing attention on national security.

"His knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us," Black told the magazine in its upcoming issue.

The comment reinjected the fear of terrorism into the campaign as both candidates had been shifting their conversation to the economy and $4-per-gallon gasoline. It also vividly recalled the 2004 contest between President Bush and Democratic Sen. John F. Kerry, in which Republicans repeatedly questioned Kerry's ability to protect the country from terrorists.

That's just stupendously wrong, and such a Rove ripoff. If that's all they have the Dems will win by a landslide in November. It's the economy, stupid.

Did you see his "apology?" He doesn't remember making the statement but doesn't deny it either. What a complete wuss.

Oh gosh, dont let Dave see this thread!

If we have a terrorist strike in the next 4 months he will blame the republicans and use this as proof that it was planned all along!

If not causing, yes, I do think if things look bleak, that some in the McCain camp would at least be hoping for an attack.

I actutally agree with him. There are alot of ignorant fear mongering people out there that believe alot of BS.

It's things like this that make me fear the October Surprise. I don't trust McCain/Bushies lackey's to not create something of the sort.

Is it just me, or is it always the Republicans who pull an "October surprise?" I remember back in 1972, when Henry Kissinger announced in mid-October that "peace was at hand" in Vietnam. Not that I think McGovern had even a snowball's chance in hell of winning, but the announcement was an outright lie designed to pull the one issue he had out from under him.

Thank God for the August (not really much of a) surprise that happened the next year!

Yeah, well will it be a terrorist thing, or perhaps the Republicans in congress, with McCain's help of course, will find a way ot lower gas prices in October.

I've called that ruse for what, three elections running now? Anyone want to take me up on gas prices taking somewhat of a tumble around September or October?

Oh I think the idiot is definitely right and I am pretty sure certain republicans are hoping for another terrorist attack because McCain is trailing Obama. But just because its true doesnt mean it needs to be said. There is a lot of stupid crap that is true that should not be said! I think the republicans are definitely going to and already trying to use the fear card, I just hope this time around the US won't fall for it.
