WASHINGTON (July 3) - The Pentagon has extended the tour of 2,200 Marines in Afghanistan, after insisting for months the unit would come home on time.

The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is doing combat operations in the volatile south, will stay an extra 30 days and come home in early November rather than October, Marine Col. David Lapan confirmed Thursday.

Military leaders as recently as Wednesday stressed the need for additional troops in Afghanistan. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has repeatedly praised the work of the 24th MEU in fighting Taliban militants in Helmand Province.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, has repeatedly said he did not intend to extend or replace the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, calling their deployment there an extraordinary, one-time effort to help tamp down the increasing violence in the south.

Asked about the possibility of an extension in early May, Gates said he would "be loath to do that." He added that "no one has suggested even the possibility of extending that rotation."

Lapan said Thursday that commanders in Afghanistan asked that the Marines stay longer.

The Pentagon announced in January that the MEU was being ordered to Afghanistan, largely because efforts to press other NATO nations to increase their troop levels at the time had failed.

What, McCain's incentive plan didn't work?

Just think, if the only war we were fighting was the legitimate one against the Taliban and bin Laden, we'd have plenty of troops available.

Ooh, can I play too????

I'll be Incident. "You liberals would rather give the Marines their time off, and let al Qaida just attack us again. The Constitution isn't a suicide pact."

Wait, I'll be Connie. "It's Clinton's fault."

:pYa know...I never single you out when I reply to a post.....you are a typically liberal. We all have our opinions and I base mine on what our government has done in the past. That is everyone's right and I don't single people out when they voice their opinion. You and I do have different views and I will not call you out on it as you have your ways of forming that view. Poking fun at someone while they voice their opinion is low...and nothing new for liberals.

Since you mentioned good ole Clinton....What has Clinton really done for us????? I ask this to many people and they can't come up with much...even the liberals I speak to have trouble. Think about it and that is why I blame for him for where we are now. Clinton was very weak when it came to foriegn policy, and he didn't like having a big military..so his actions/or lack of speaks for him.

Now...to my opinion on this topic. Getting your job extended is a normal event...My husband works on the road, and almost every job he's on is extended. One job he was on was extended a full two years...it's apart of the job. You learn to adjust and live with it. If you can't then you are the one with the problem. I don't hear too many military people complaining about it..it's apart of being in the military and apart of life itself.

You don't single any of us out (or so you say), but you do lump us all in as one great, evil Liberal machine...
