The Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080903/NEWS15/80904002) invited a panel of Michigan voters to weigh in on Gov. Sarah Palin's speech last night. Their reactions run the gamut, but the independents didn't seem to care for her very much.

Ilene Beninson, 52, Berkley independent: "Her speech contained few statements about policy or the party platform. … I am not convinced that Palin's experience as a mayor or governor in Alaska meet the qualifications to be vice president much less one stroke or heart attack away from being commander in chief.”

Mike Kosh, 38, West Bloomfield independent: “The way it looks to me, she's the Republican vice presidential nominee for one reason: Because Hillary wasn't selected.”

George Lentz, 66, Southfield independent: “I was completely underwhelmed. She was a Republican novelty act with a sophomoric script. It was not even a speech I would expect for someone running for the local PTA, much less for vice president.”

Diane Murphy, 42, Sterling Heights independent: “It appears that once she makes up her mind, that is the end of it. We live in a gray world, not every answer is black and white.”

Jan Wheelock, 58, Royal Oak independent: “Nothing worked for me. I found her barrage of snide remarks and distortions to be a major turnoff. She is not a class act. The most important point she made is that she will be an effective attack dog.”

52,38,66,42,58......do you see a trend here?????? Why didn't they include younger people in this panel....better yet, younger women. From what I've been hearing these past few days in MI, Palin impressed quite a few people in my area. Her speech was still the talk today while I was shopping....

If Palin does not have the experience to be a VP, then what in the world qualifies Obama to be President...his 150 active days in the senate, or 1 1/2 years of running his campaign. During his active days in the Senate..he didn't vote nay or yea on anything, he always voted present so he wouldn't have to answer to his voting records as he ran for president.

I think the way the media is treating Palin is horrible....I don't ever see the media question the men about their skills as a father while holding a position in government. I don't ever see the media make comments about how Hilary wears her hair or the outfits she wears.....but they are sure going after Palin.

You seem to have difficulties with the truth. I guess that's why you're the perfect Republican. Obama cast over 4,000 votes in the state Senate. He voted "present" 129 times.

Perhaps I'm being harsh and you just mistyped. You really meant to say "almost never" when you typed "always," right?

Oh, those typo's. I'm sure she'll acknowledge the error as soon as she logs in again.

People in the media used to make a LOT of comments about Hillary's hair style, and I even heard one this year about how she finally found a style that suits her.

And, speaking of suits, she didn't refer to her campaign as the "sisterhood of the travelling pants suit" because no one ever commented on her wardrobe.
