Possibly more than anyone on Earth, Britney Spears' life is constantly documented by the media, which voraciously reports on the singer's every step and misstep. But what's it like to be in her shoes?

With her new album, Circus, set for release in just a few weeks, the singer is ready to show the world her side of the story.

Britney has joined forces with MTV for a 90-minute documentary about her return to the pop-music spotlight. Tentatively titled "For the Record," the special is set to air on November 30 at 10 p.m. on MTV, two days before Circus is released on December 2 (the singer's 27th birthday).

"So much has gone on over the last couple of years and there's a lot that people don't know about me that I want them to know," Spears told MTV News in a statement about the special. "I wanted to make this film because I started to feel like I wasn't being seen in the light that I wanted to be seen in. This is an opportunity to set the record straight and talk about what I've been through and where I'm headed."

The documentary combines personal stories with behind-the-scenes footage of her comeback. Cameras follow her to the recording studio, to rehearsals, to press tours, to the video shoot for her latest single, "Womanizer," and even to her hometown in Louisiana. Backstage footage from her recent triumphant appearance at the Video Music Awards is also featured.

Through it all, we hear Britney talking about the hardships that led up to this comeback. "I've been through a lot, and there's a lot people don't know," she says in the film. "Sometimes it can get lonely 'cause you don't open the gate. I'm stuck in this place, and I just cope every day."

Britney also owns up to the mistakes the world has watched her make, and offers some telling insight into how she feels about it all now. "I sit there and I look back," she says, before asking rhetorically: "I'm a smart person, what the hell was I thinking?"

"For the Record" airs Sunday, November 30 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

I'm really happy she realizes how crazy she went. I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean... it's a way of telling that she's got her sanity back.

I like when she talks real like this. Not that baby accent she does like the Z100 interview. I think she thinks people miss the old cutesy Britney which is why she played up to it but when she talks like this you can tell she gets it. And she sounds like she has sense when she talks like this

^ agree. BUT I think she talks like that sometimes when she is nervous. She doesnt always seem sure of herself when she talks so she sounds quiet and sort of childish. But its cute lol Shes so real and I love it.

Want to know what was going through Britney Spears' head during her darkest days? Tune in to MTV's 90-minute exclusive documentary "Britney: For the Record" to find out.

Airing Nov. 30, "For the Record" documents a three-month period of Spears' life earlier this year, including sessions for her upcoming Jive album, "Circus," and preparations for her appearance on MTV's Video Music Awards.

An MTV spokesperson says "no topic was off limits" during the interviews.

"I sit there and I look back and I'm like, 'I'm a smart person. What the hell was I thinking?,'" Spears says at one point. "I've been through a lot in the past two or three years and there's a lot that people don't know."

"Circus" is due Dec. 2 via Jive. First single "Womanizer" debuted this week at No. 26 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, No. 96 on the Billboard Hot 100 and moved 44-32 on the Pop 100 in its second week on the chart. It should rise substantially on the Hot 100 next week, after its first round of digital sales are factored in.

The "Womanizer" video premieres tomorrow (Oct. 10) on ABC's "20/20.

I'm glad to see that she is finally opening up about her mishaps. Before (like prior to 2005), she used to skirt the issues and be coy, but now she's addressing them head on, and appears to be doing so in a level-headed, self-depreacting manner, which makes me have more respect for her. Congrats!

You know what? I think this is awesome. I think this is EXACTLY what she needs to do. Clear the air. Open up. Let it out. Unfortunately, everything she's been through has played out in the most public manner it ever possibly could. So, whether or not the public has a right to know these things....we already do. So I think that something like this is exactly what she needs, just to clarify things for herself.

I mean, obviously in her industry, publicity matters. And doing this kind of damage control is absolutely necessary.

I am looking forward to this, to seeing her perspective of everything, now that she is coming out the other side of this whole ordeal.

Agreed. That was always the one thing about her that drove me crazy, avoiding topics and questions but still toying with them in a way.

Sometimes maybe she just didn't want to open up, and that's fine. But, it's kind of cool now that she has the guts to say what she's feeling. I know she's not obligated to. But, since she probably will to some degree then more kudos to her. I know I wouldn't be able to do that.

I actually liked that Britney didn't really fully discuss rumors and gossip that surrounds her. It helped make it easier to look past all the tabloids and focus on her music, since she didn't give them much to ride on.

I still don't believe that she'll fully explain everything because it will definitely take the focus off her new album, but its nice that she's acknowledging some things, so we'll know she wasn't completely out of it. :D
