It may be too late, but this poll last week from Faith in Public Life, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and a few other groups should get the attention of the McCain camp and the GOP hierarchy at the Republican National Committee.

The survey shows that Latino Protestants are breaking away from McCain in serious numbers. They favor Obama over McCain by 50.4 percent to 33.6 percent.

What's striking about those numbers is that Bush got about 63 percent of Latino Protestants in 2004. As I recall, they made up about 2 percent of his winning 51 percent.

A shift in such a slender part of a winning base four years ago may not sound like much, but think how close recent presidential elections have been. When you move two percent to the other side, it can seal the deal.

Republicans in general should read this data because immigration is the issue that's driving Latino Protestants away from the GOP. Latino Protestants still put a high premium on controlling abortions, but this poll shows that the way Republicans moved away from Bush on immigration is costing them with a natural part of their base.
