I keep reading about Britneys dad making her "cheese grits" and because I'm not American, I have no idea what this is. Can someone explain :)

Its a southern food. Usually grits is a breakfast food, like oatmeal. I've never had grits though, or cheese grits, so I assume cheese grits is grits with cheese in it. Sounds gross if you ask me.

Grits are a Southern thing. They're delicious...even with cheese in them.

YALL CRAAAZY. Grits are fantastic. Especially with salt, pepper, and butter, and mixed together with scrambled eggs. That's some great food. I don't like putting cheese in mine though. That mess is not good.

Are grits not sold in Australia? I'm sure they are.

GenieStroke

No, not unless they are called something else, but I've never heard of them, or anything like the discription you guys have given.

Do you guys still have Denny's restaurants over there? It's an American chain and they sell grits.

No we don't have Denny's. How do you make them? strangly enough, I wanna make some now lolLol. Well grits come in a bag or container, like this:

http://www.quakeroats.com/qfb_OurBrands/images/ProductArray/Grits.jpg

only, they're uncooked (http://www.foodsubs.com/Photos/hominygrits2.jpg) in the container. To cook them you basically just pour some into a pot of boiling water and let it all boil while stirring it regularly, and the grits eventually soak up all the water, and then you have cooked grits. Now just add salt and pepper and butter, and wallah (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/42/Gritsonly.jpg). Tasty grits. That creamy looking material on top of the grits in that picture is butter. It needs to be stirred into the grits. Now some folks like their grits more soupy, so they add more water accordingly when cooking it. Some folks like their grits kind of soupy, yet thick, so they don't use as much water when cooking it. And some folks like their grits cheesy, so they add cheese and then you have cheese grits. I prefer mine to be cheese-free and soupy yet thick.

Here's a nice bowl of grits:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2391/2352969236_8ac4e2f7a0.jpg?v=0

That's the way I like mine, but this guy has WAY too much butter on them. He's going to have a heart attack.

Now I've just went through Google images looking at grits and I have found that some people make the strangest looking grits I've ever seen. Like this (http://theeatenpath.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/jodies_grits.jpg), and this (http://www.ansonmills.com/page19/page41/files/page41_1.jpg), and this (http://www.dayrecipe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/Jalapeno-Cheddar-Grits0.jpg), and especially THIS (http://www.auntpurplescooking.com/Green%20Chile%20Cheese%20Grits.jpg). All of those look gross. And some people just can't cook: exhibit A (http://knittingwannabe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/grits2007.JPG). So yeah. Some people like to get out of this world with it. I prefer normal grits that look like human food, lol.

I looked them up and it seems like it's oatmeal...with cheese in it. What does it taste like?

Nah, oatmeal is something completely different.

Also, what is Valeeta?

PieceOfBrit

LOL. I think you mean "Velveeta" , which is a brand name that makes cheese and cheese-types products (like macaroni and cheese, for example).

It's like scrambled egg with pieces of potato in it. So good. I'll eat anything with potato.

Denny's, in my opinion, is not where you go to get GOOD grits. If you're going to buy a brand, Quaker is acceptable.

Quaker even has a cheese grits recipe on its website.

Grits taste nothing like oatmeal.lol

I guess the best way to describe it would be a grainy form of instant mashed potatoes. but they don't mesh together when stirred in water. They have somewhat the same taste and severed the same way. But grits are exclusively a breakfast food.

Grits is an American Indian corn-based food common in the Southern United States, consisting of coarsely ground corn. It was traditionally served during war.

Why the hell would you post the BIG ASS picture when I've already posted basically the same picture?

Because my picture is more explicit.

And because LD is great enough so that it doesn't stretch the forum when I post my awesomely huge pictures.

But you're still stomping your feet over it. Grow up lol.But I'm not stomping my feet over. I said "whatever" about the whole picture issue, and this is my second time reminding you of that. Btw telling me to grow up does not make you any more mature than me, because in the end we're both doing the same thing right now: refusing to drop this whole thing. Don't be a hypocrite dear.

I wasn't taking a swipe at you, more at myself because I'm entertaining this nonsense as well. No worries, I'm kind of in a bad mood cause I had a bad thanks giving! Sorry

Just enough that I can stay up making bitchy replies all night but in this situation it's not warranted, not here anyway...

When it comes to holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, holidays that have to a stereotypical image, I forget that it's possible for folks to have a bad one. Sorry your Thanksgiving was bad dear.

I've never had grits before. The look like Oatmeal, but if they're more corn or potato based, then I can see having them with cheese. It sounds kind of yummy, but I wouldn't know.

I always thought they were more like something crunchy in a pan, like hash browns or home fries.

Stop making this thread about personal problems and bashing. Take it privately. ::sunny::

And Cheese Grits are fattening and not healthy. Carbs, carbs, carbz.

I love Brit, but her father really put on the icing of a "White Trash man" (While in the Kitchen making Grits) in a white-stained tank top with a beer belly and talking that country slang..
UGH
