Birthday girl Brit shapes up

Light the candles for birthday girl Britney Spears - but don't be surprised if she turns down her piece of cake.
The pop princess celebrates her 27th birthday today with the release of a critically lauded record, "Circus," and a live appearance on "Good Morning America." There are also renewed signs that she's coming to view her postpartum, post-custody battle body as nothing less than a temple.
"I have had to work hard at getting [my body] back to where it used to be," Spears says in the January issue of Glamour, which arrives on newsstands Dec. 9.
In a pre-birthday jaunt through Europe last week, Spears, a mother of two, showed off her fetching figure, writhing around stage in hot pants at Germany's Bambi Awards and, on Saturday, performing her catchy hit "Womanizer" on Simon Cowell's "X Factor" in England.
Getting back into shape after two pregnancies, two failed marriages and a prolonged dispute over guardianship of her sons has been a challenge, says Spears, who arrived back in the United States on Sunday, just in time for the release of "Circus."
Going to the gym "makes me feel good and feel like I've done something," Spears says. "It's important to take care of your body." But it's also important to do things in moderation: Spears says she's learned that only making three trips a week to the gym - "even two" - is just fine.
Today will begin with Brit's much-hyped appearance on "GMA." She is scheduled to perform two songs during the 8 a.m. hour of the program - "Womanizer" and "Circus." She'll be feted tonight with an album release party at Tenjune in Meatpacking District.
Welcoming 'Circus'
In Sunday's FanFare, Newsday's Glenn Gamboa called Britney Spears' "Circus" the "best album of her career." (Read his review at Newsday.com/music).
Here is a sampling of what other critics are saying:
Like any good circus, Britney's version will leave you thoroughly entertained.
- THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
She's churned out a perfectly viable album that telegraphs self-awareness, sexual confidence and her most sought-after commodity, control.
- LOS ANGELES TIMES
Songs here are far better than music by such a troubled and supposedly doomed veteran has any right to be.
- SUNDAY TIMES
OF LONDON
Britney's friendliest album since 2001.
- The BOSTON GLOBE
