another one of those things i found when going through cartons trying to make the timeline for BAT2 was this article someone from chicago had sent to me in 1988. i had never heard of this guy but he had been in my shop and had signed my book. this "opinion poll" book was left at the front of the place, so that i could look over it and see who "we" were...us bruce fans.here are the questions i asked at the time plus some new ones. it seems like a good time to ask again. this was done here in some form a year ago but some things have changed since then. so if you want, take the time and let's see who we are now. ignore the questions you don't want to answer.

name...TSnide, T for Todd, Snide is short for my long last name
age...34
born where?/live now...Alexandria, MN,...Roseville, MN
occupation...Former Computer Operator, Radio Announcer...took a leave after my divorce to finish school (graduating in May).
followed bruce since...1984, but liked what few songs I heard on the radio prior to.
favorite song...Thunder Road, if I have to narrow it down to one!
favorite album...Born To Run, ditto above
favorite line from a song..."God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of"..."Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?"..."It's a sad man my friend who's livin' in his own skin, and can't stand the company"..."We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school"...sorry, couldn't narrow it down to one!
first concert you attended...Minneapolis 1992, shoulda been St. Paul 1984, but I've shared that story ad nauseum...
favorite concert you attended...Tampa 2000, the "Point Blank" fiasco notwithstanding...I was too emotionally distraught at the Minneapolis 1999 show for that to be my "favorite."
favorite unreleased song...not sure if it counts, but Thunder Road...unless you meant NEVER released, like on an official album. But I don't "collect" boots, not yet anyway, so I don't know many unreleased songs...LOHAD until it gets released is my choice.
and most importantly WHY?...Why Bruce? I originally connected because of the commerciality, yet non-pop-like songs on BITUSA. Yeah, it's too pop for many of our standards here, but compared to what was being produced then (and now for that matter), it was simply the best written and performed rock-n-roll around. Anyway, what really hooked me was getting beyond the pop appeal, I started noticing that his songs on BITUSA each had something I could relate to. It was the first time in my life I ever connected like that. I didn't have to have a brother who fought in 'Nam to relate, my "Bobby Jean" was a girl who didn't move away (I did), and "My Hometown" didn't have a textile mill and I was only 18, not 35, but I sure did remember sitting on my dad's lap and steering. So I began buying his other stuff and the same phenomenon happened. It's been that way ever since, and every album he has ever released has these connectors. For every thing I have gone through, good and bad, and every emotion I have experienced, there is a Bruce Springsteen song that explains it better than I ever could.

favorite album: WIESS, at least most of the time
favorite line from a song: "....I watch a young man in a red shirt walking through a night so still
Put his jacket round his girl as the autumn wind sends a chill..........." purely for sentimental, sappy, nostolgic reasons.
first concert attended: Jacksonville (1977?) front row, right side!
favorite concert attended: although I have been to some more exciting shows, I would have to pick Atlanta from this last tour because I shared it with my youngest daughter who is a Bruce nut too. Just watching her face, seeing her sing the words to all the songs.
favorite unreleased song: definately LOHAD.
why? very difficult to answer. I connect with it on a personal level, husband and I have been married for 22 years, raised kids, had financial ups and mostly downs, family members and friends are beginning to die on us, it's become a song that we can sing for each other, to offer comfort and love. (and he's not even a fan)

All Heaven Will Allow
Mar 1st, 2001, 08:13 AM
Name: Beth Green
Age: 30 soon to be 31
Born/Live: Long Island/Live now in Jersey City, NJ
Occupation: Admin. Assistant in Financial Company
Followed since: Since 1984, I adored Dancing in the Dark and then when I saw the video and the butt, I became a HUGE fan!! Bought everything that had been released at that point.
Favorite Song: Hungry Heart. It was the first song of Bruce's that I had ever heard, when I was 10 and I was
thrilled when I made the complete connection.
Favorite Album: The River. It has so many things to offer. It just depends on my mood. This can be said of all of the albums.
Favorite Line: "I wear my love, darlin, without shame. I'd be proud if you would wear my name." I always loved that line, and hoped someday to find someone that I could have that kind of feeling with. Now, I know that the feeling does exist.
First Concert: 7/20/99 at the Meadowlands
Best Concert: 6/27/00. Awesome show and I met this incredibly great bunch of people, including (though I didn't know it at the time) the love of my life. (That would be you Paulie ):)
Favorite Unreleased Song: LOHAD, still gives me chills.
Why? I always loved Bruce because he made me think about what he was saying. It is not just glossy pop music that you get nothing out of. I didn't always get it when I was 14, but as I kept listening, I slowly did get it. No matter what I am going through, I can find some message in the music that helps me get through it. Also, he has always seems more of a real person than most performers. I constantly point out to my family all that he does for charitable organizations and people in general. And last but certainly not least, his music brought me together with the only person that I could ever think of being with now. If it hadn't been for the MSG stand and lots of other circumstances, I never would have met him.

born where?/live now Born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. Currently a resident of Springfield, Massachustetts, though I spend much of my time in Worcester, Massahcusetts, as I go to school here.
occupation Student... prospective Doctor, Dentist, Rock n Roll Musician, or artist... eclectic, no?
followed bruce since the grand old year of 1999, though I first heard him in 84 and first liked him in 95
favorite song Thunder Road... ahhhh
favorite album BTR or WEISS, it's a tough call, on any given day it will be one or the other
favorite line from a song
"Outside, the street's on fire in a real death waltz,
between what's flesh and what's fantasy.
And the Poets down here don't write nothing at all,
They just stand back and let it all be."
first concert you attended Albany 11/21/99
favorite concert you attended I think that Hartford 5/00 was probably the best show, but MSG 6/29 is definitely my favorite (i still consider it the best day of my life)
favorite unreleased song Until I knew about Tracks, it was Thundercrack, now it's Tokyo (and the band played) or possibly American Skin, which in less than FIVE WEEKS will make it Tokyo
and most importantly WHY? Bruce Springsteen connects to me, someone seperated by 30 years in age, and 15 years musically. But lyrically he hits all the nails squarely on the head, capturing emotion like no other songwriter I know of, with his peers being only the greatest and most elite, in Lennon/McCartney and Bob Dylan. On stage, even at 50, when i saw him live, he's more exciting than nearly any other act i've ever seen, or am likely to. Thanks bruce!

Age: 39...really!
Born Where/Live Now: Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada/Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
Occupation: University Professor
Followed Bruce Since: Became big fan in mid-80s, casual fan before that time
Favorite Song: Hmmm...that's a tough one. On any given day, it could be Backstreets, Jungleland, Promised Land, Prove It All Night....
Favorite Album: Darkness On The Edge Of Town
Favorite Line From A Song: There's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor, I packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm; Gonna be a twister to blow everything down, That ain't got the faith to stand its ground (OK, so it's not a single line, so sue me! ;))
First Concert You Attended: Toronto, 11/6/92
Favorite Concert You Attended: Atlanta, 6/4/00 closely followed by Toronto, 5/4/00 (my wife's first!)
Favorite Unreleased Song: Until April 3, I'd say American Skin (41 Shots) because of the power and passion and sadness it evokes. It's an emotional rollercoaster ride. Favorite Bruce cover would have to be Trapped.
And Most Importantly WHY: People have been responding to this question by referring to Bruce in general or their favorite unreleased song. Because I've already explained the latter, I'll focus on the former. Because the music connects on so many levels. The lyrics are full of evocative imagery and tell a story. Sure there are some songs that are throwaway pop songs, but many tell stories of real people. They are poetic, but also read like a great novel. The music sets the backdrop for the stories, creating an emotional state that allows for the interpretation of the lyrics (unless you are a politician, it seems!).

favorite song - 10th Avenue/The Promised Land/Cadilac Ranch/The Wish

first concert you attended - Charlotte, October 1992
favorite concert you attended - Charlotte, April 2000

and most importantly WHY? - Because I love the paradox of his songs in juxtaposition to one another, the dichotomies of life...eternal hope and ever-present hopelessness. Because there is something in his songs that resonates, that triggers something emotional.

Favorite Song: Jungleland, followed closely by Lost in the Flood and Incident on 57th Street
Favorite Album: Born to Run
Favorite Line from a song:"The Rangers had a homecoming
In Harlem late last night..." The beginning of a song I could hear 1000 times in a row and never get sick of it.
First concert: Well I'm ashamed to say I don't remeber the exact date. It was at the LA Sports Arena in 1981. (that's just pathetic)I found the ticket stub. It was August 27,1981
Favorite concert: May 22,2000, Arrowhead Pond. I got to sit 5th row center and just seeing him that close made it the best show. Also seeing him at Wembley Stadium in 1985 was fun.
Favorite unreleased song: I like Stand on it and Roulette. 41 Shots is also great. Too many great ones to choose from.

song-Thunder Road, Backstreets, Promised Land, Badlands, This Hard Land, this could get pretty long here.
album-BTR/Darkness/WIESS
line-I want to find one face that aint looking through me/roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair/blow away the dreams that tear you apart/blame it on the lies that killed us blame it on the truth that ran us down/how can you pick one...how can I stop?....
first show-Hoosier Dome BITUSA tour. Should have been Chicago during the River tour....aaaargh!
favorite show-6/26/00 followed closely by Columbus 11/99, my wife's first show.
unreleased song-was Frankie, now LOHAD
why- Seeing a concert got me hooked. The quality of his live performance is without parallel. He really has fun performing and shares that. The music has a way of speaking to his fans both as an individual and part of a larger group. As posted by someone earlier: in a word, CONNECTION.

age: 40
born where?/live now: Baltimore, Maryland. I live in California now by way of many other places.
occupation: Preschool Teacher
followed bruce since: 1974
favorite song: Backstreets, Back in Your Arms, Incident on 57th Street. There are lots of others.
favorite album: Born to Run
favorite line from a song: There are too many, it's hard to pick one. Right now off the top of my head I'll say "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse"
first concert you attended: Springfield, Mass. Sept. 1976
favorite concert you attended: Another tough one. I've only been to 8. The last night at Staples in L.A. was great, Vegas was fun, Anaheim I sat (well not sat) in the 5th row and Bruce slapped my hand. Any Bruce show is my favorite if I got to go to it!
favorite unreleased song: Land Of Hope and Dreams
and most importantly WHY? Bruce writes from the heart or the soul and puts emotions and feelings into words that I could never express. It's like he knows what we (or I) are going through and makes it all seem real, that we aren't alone in our pain or joy or anger. He's the best live performer, even at 50 he outdoes the competition. And that butt.....LOL

and most importantly WHY? because his music speaks to my heart like no other; plus what he gives "to the kids" in his live shows, once you see one, you could never turn your back on anyone who can give so much to you like he does during his shows. He is simply amazing and I like his style, where he hasn't let all this go to his head. He seems very down-to-earth.

and finally WHY?
I think I have told this story again so I won't bore anyone with all the details however, (this may sound corny) Bruce's music literally saved my life! Thought no one understood how I felt and then I heard Bruce's lyrics and said finally someone who completely understands what I am going through. He has been constant in my life ever since...
I think I have answered all the appropriate questions...

Name: Debbie
Age: 40 1/2
Occupation: Dental Hygienist
Born: Columbia, SC Now: Central NY
Followed Bruce since: 1978
Favorite Song: Thunder Road
Favorite Album: Darkness on the Edge of Town
Favorite Line from a song: "We ain't that young anymore"
First concert attended: July 1984 Saratoga. a blizzard kept me from traveling to see Bruce in 1979.
Favorite Concert: Atlanta 6/4-backstage pass and front row, debut of 41 shots and Further.
Favorite unreleased song: Further on up the road
Why? Because since I first became aware of Bruce's music I felt connected to it. I was from a small town and was dreaming of a way out. I related to Bruce's stories he told in the songs. It seemed like whatever he was going through when he wrote the music was what I was feeling when I heard it. His music has helped me to get through some very rough times in my life, and I hope it continues to do so.

Two Answers for us!!
Boss MD
Name: George
Age: 41
Born where?/live now: Syracuse, NY/Elkton, MD
Occupation: Contract Specialist for US Army
Followed bruce since: 75
Favorite song: (Geez...only one??) I guess Jungleland
Favorite album: Darkness
Favorite line from a song: My signature line since it so aptly describes the emptiness that one feels when IT all falls apart.
First concert you attended: 78 Baton Rouge, LA
Favorite concert you attended: Philly 99 (B-Day)
Favorite unreleased song: LOHAD (41 Shots is great, but LOHAD has so many emotions with it...great song content, end of concert[disappointment here], great comraderie in the audience)
Boss RKS
Name: Trish
Age: 38
Born where?/live now: Frankfurt, Germany/Elkton, MD
Occupation: General Assistant in Ele. School
Followed bruce since: 79
Favorite song: Paradise by the C
Favorite album: Nebraska
Favorite line from a song: "Go over to your radios and turn the mother f***er up as loud as she'll go (my wife is saying this??)
First concert you attended: 88 Chapel Hill, NC (with Boss MD!)
Favorite concert you attended: Philly 99 (B-Day)
Favorite unreleased song: 41 Shots because is poignant and took a lot of courage to play it in NY.
Oops forgot why...
Why? Because I breathe. Better the sun not come up or the earth spin. Not to follow Bruce is tantamount to a life of misery and expressionless/emotionless drudgery. Where else can a 40 yr old man go to cry upon hearing Jungleland for the 1st time in 16 years? Who else could possible write/compose/sing compositions in such a manner that each time I hear the song (as I played on "Track Repeat" for 4 days straight) new subtleties and nuances? Who else could possibly know what I am thinking in any given situation? Please don't misunderstand, but I can't possibly imagine going through life without Bruce. The years (26 now) have held such memories that the memories now are life and life is the memory. But I ramble. I go to concerts and I get The Promise and This Hard Land, not E Street Shuffle or Incident or NYCS. Thus I must yet go to more concerts or listen to boots ceaselessly. Sorry this was so long. I stop now. :D

Age: 43
Born where/live now: Born in NYC, now living in So. California.
Occupation: Database Analyst
Followed Bruce: Since 1980
Favorite Song: Tough One! "Incident", "Back in your arms", "The Way" and I gotta say it - "Sherry Darling"
Favorite Album: Born to Run
Favorite line: "I believe in the love that you gave me, I believe in the faith that can save me, I believe in the hope and I pray that some it may raise me...
First Concert: 1984 Born In the U.S.A., Los Angeles Coliseum. It was incredible!
Favorite Concert: March 9, 2000 Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with Dari, Lonestar Girl and Geeboss. Sat on the floor for the first time, I had goose bumps all over!
Favorite unreleased song: "Land of Hopes and Dreams". Wish he would have included "The Way" on Tracks.
Why do I love Bruce? Well, how much space do I have? From the first time I really sat and listened to him he became my best friend. His music turned loneliness into the greatest company one could have. It's seen me through every good and bad period of my life and will forever. As far as being a performer, there's no one else who pours out as much passion and energy as Bruce. And who else could possibly look that good in a pair of tight black jeans? :)

Favorite album: WIESS, Tunnel, Darkness.
Favorite line from a song: "She sits on the porch of her Daddy's house / now all her pretty dreams're torn / she stares off alone into the night / with the eyes of one who hates for just being born" is one that comes to mind. But he's got so many others...
First concert: 7/27/88, Oslo
Favorite concert: 4/26/00, Pittsburgh / 6/24/99, Stockholm. 4/21/00, Charlotte is a contender.
Favorite unreleased song: Ballad Of The Self-Loading Pistol, Preacher's Daughter, None But The Brave...to name a few.
Why? : because. I can't explain it, but his music is like a friend. And like some of the others have said: connection.

Name: Paul Murphy
Age:43
Born in Waterbury, CT, still live in Waterbury, CT
Occupation: funeral director
Followed Bruce since 1976
Favorite songs: There are too many to name one
Favorite album: BTR
Favorite line: "I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk"
First concert: 8/21/76 Palace Theater, Waterbury, CT, I just got the boot.
Favorite concert: 5/8/00 Hartford and 6/15/00(I was MIB'd),
but there have been many
Favorite unreleased song: It was the Fever but Tracks solved that problem. Now LOHAD but that is also soon to be solved.
Why: My life was changed after my first show in 1976. He filled a big void in what was out there musically at that time. Since then I've been a rider on that train. These past couple of years have just topped it off. Personal highlight: Shaking his hand at the Stone Pony in November
Hidinonabackstreets
Mar 2nd, 2001, 11:48 AM
Name: Steve
Age: 42
Born: Saginaw, MI grew up in Flint
Now in Nashvlle, TN
Occupation: musician/songwriter
Followed Bruce since: had the BTR record in '75..then we got a hold of some of the '78 boots..kept an eye on him the whole way, but didn't in up to my neck until I saw him live.
Fave Song: An impossible question
Fave LP: Live '75-'85 because it's full of so many 'moments', TOL, Nebraska, and if I keep going I'll just list them all..
Fave Line: There are so many that have applied to so much, I find it difficult to cite just one or two. However, I have noticed that even though Tunnel isn't necessarily a favorite album, a lot of people's favorite lines are from that record.
First show: Detroit, March 28, 1988
Fave show: Of 8 shows I've seen, I love them all for one thing or another. Again, they're all full of those 'moments'.
Fave unreleased song: probably LOHAD..
Why: He's different. Somehow, especially when you see a live show, you feel you've made a friend. He's never exuded the 'rock star elitest' vibe and in the stories on bootlegs he seems to make himself
accessable of the human experience. It makes the audience
feel like they're not alone in their conflicts. Everyone in his audience could say at one time or another, "He's talkin' about me."
At the Joad show I saw, some one yelled out, "We love you, Bruce!"
he replied, "Thanks, I love you, too." I immediately thought, 'but you don't know us...'. After pondering THAT for a while, I thought, 'Well..then again, maybe he does..'

Name: Leslie
Gender: Female (Sorry, had to add a category since my silly screen name is a source of confusion and my real name doesn't resolve the issue!)
Age: 37
Born/Live Now: Born and live in the LA area
Occupation: Independent Consultant working with schools and non-profit organizations
Followed Bruce Since: 1984. I wasn't an immediate convert, but I had college roommates who were huge fans and I remember a road trip with Sherry Darling blasting from the tape deck. I eventually bought a used copy of BTR and the rest is history.
Favorite Song: Impossible to choose! I'll go with some of the obvious contenders, BTR, Thunder Road, Badlands, as well as Growin' Up, Candy's Room and Point Blank.
Favorite Album: BTR or Darkness
Favorite Line: Again, too hard to narrow down but the 1st thing that came to mind was "is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse" so I'll stick with that.
First concert: October 1984 LA Sports Arena. I came down from the Bay Area with friends after spending 8 or so hours in line and being devastated about failing to obtain tickets there. Didn't tell my parents I was in town, knowing they'd think "you drove all the way down here for a CONCERT?!?" Little did I know that I would be going to far greater extremes in my thirties!!
Favorte Concert: Not sure I have a favorite. July 1, 2000, October 23, 1999 and the first night of the Christic Institute stand out, but all have been incredible.
Favorite Unreleased Song: Have to go with the majority here and say LOHAD
WHY? The passion and compassion that permeate the music, and the genius songwriting ability that captures all the nuances of life. The live performance aspect -- his energy and passion on stage are like nothing I've ever experienced, and there's such a sense of community created among a bunch of strangers who may have absolutely nothing else in common. Oh yeah, and that butt ain't too bad either...

Favorite Song: Thunder Road
Favorite LP/Album: Born To Run

Favorite Show: The first is always special . . . that, and it's the only one (but I did have tickets to the first show of BF38 above, and Atlanta 6/4 . . .).
Favorite Unreleased Song: "Further On Up The Road"--it says, "We'll be back . . ."
And, most importantly, . . .
Why? Honest rock & roll. And, he sings to most people's hearts. And, I've never seen a live peformer with as much intensity, energy, and respect for his fans as Bruce.
And a whole lot of other stuff that I won't get into right now, as it would take a while.

Favorite Song: Born to Run (with The Promise closing on the outside)
Favorite Album: Born to Run (by a nose over Darkness)

First Concert Attended: January 24, 1985 Providence, RI
Favorite Concert: Hartford, May 8, 2000 (the best show I've ever seen)
Favorite Unreleased Song: LOHAD
WHY??: the passion, the dedication, the committment to his craft and his fans continue to amaze me more than two decades later. His songs are so easy to relate to because they so perfectly capture our own hopes, fears, dreams, nightmares...our very lives. And that connection is so greatly intensified in concert, as he reaches out to all of us, to let us all revel in this ministry of rock & roll. To borrow from Carly Simon: "Nobody does it better."

Rams, I like your choice for favorite line. I realize that I have already cast my vote, but this weekend my wife and I celebrate 14 years of marriage. As I pointed out earlier, 5/4 was her first Bruce experience and, when I said I needed to see more, she said "Go for it!" That was why I was in Atlanta and why I had the opportunity to meet a lot of people from this board and had the chance to see one of the most incredible shows ever (the American Skin and FOUTR debuts). She has been tolerant, might I even say, supportive, of my obsession (with apologies to "Obsessed", though I haven't seen her post in quite a while). To her, I say, Happy Anniversary!

Name: Greg
Age: 41
Born/Now: Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
Occupation: Teacher (Gr. 6 this year)
Favorite Song: I don't have one favorite above all others..... so many greats...but always seem to go back to almost everything on Darkness...especially: Badlands, Prove It, Promised Land, Racing in the Street
Favorite Album: Darkness on the Edge of Town
Followed Bruce since: the day I bought Darkness in 1978... a convert ever since!
Favorite unreleased song: The Way
First Show: Minneapolis Met Center...May 10, 1988..
Favorite Show: FARGO Fargodome during the last tour. I was able to get 8th row floor seats. Bruce was in a great mood and put on a spectacular show! It was also the first time my good friend ( we got into Bruce together in '78) and brother-in-law had ever seen Bruce and the E Street Band. After hearing me talk about his concerts for years, it was quite a moving experience to finally share a concert together.
Why? Keeping it short....for me, it's the raw emotion, honesty, humanity and the passion in Bruce's music.....no other artist speaks to me so personally and directly... his music is a celebration of life.
Favorite Line: ...it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive!

Favorite line from a song: Is a dream a lie if it don't come true Or is it something worse?/Blow away the dreams that tear you apart. Blow away the dreams that break your heart. Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and broken hearted/I'll love you with all the madness in my soul/Dreams will not be thwarted...Faith will be rewarded/I believe in the love that you gave me. I believe in the hope that can save me. I believe in the faith.../It's a sad man my friend who's livin' in his own skin and can't stand the company/You can't shut off the risk and the pain without losin' the love that remains/
First concert: 8/31/85
Favorite concert: toss up between 5/8/00 which I shared with family members and 6/26/00 when I got to rub Bruce's upper thigh and look into his beautiful eyes : )
Favorite unreleased song: American Skin (41 Shots)
Why: Bruce has literally saved my life during a very long and difficult period. Because he can express so wonderfully all my thoughts and feelings that I find so difficult to express myself. Because I can go to a show alone and be surrounded by friends that I haven't met and yet we all share a connection. Because of his quiet generosity. Because he lives his life on his own terms without all the publicity that others in his position seem to crave. Because when I am faced with a difficult situation, I can find inspiration in Bruce's lyrics and music that help me to have faith in myself and the universe. Because, quite simply, it is Bruce-the man and his music.

hey..i like to pose these things. doesn't mean i like to answer them.
name...dari. hey the day i signed on was my first day on the internet. never thought to use an alias. now i'm glad i didn't.
age...emsquared,foryou, and i are pleading the fifth on this one. let's just say younger than bruce but older than most people, it seems, on here.
born where?/live now....NYC/ santa monica, california
occupation...artist/designer..right now i design kid's clothes and gift items.
followed bruce since....i can remember. unlike most people who can give you an exact date, concert, etc. i went to a few of the early shows before i became religious about it. but it was definitely around 70-71.
favorite song...if you don't know one of them by now you haven't been reading this thing for very long. but it is a tie between nyc serenade and thunder road. i got to hear one of them at almost every concert since 1975. wish i could say the same about the other. but geeboss and i will get to hear it again someday.just hope we're together when it happens.
favorite album...born to run/wiess...just depends on the day you ask me.
favorite line from a song...show a little faith there's magic in the night, you ain't a beauty but hey you're alright .....hey vibesman hey jazzman, play me you're new york city serenade (okay, so he only said the "new york city" part in concert but for me it's always in there) ....so walk tall, or baby don't walk at all...can i go on? do i need to?
first concert you attended...cafe wha?/nyc dec 1967-jan 1968
this was my teenage hangout and i went there every weekend as a kid. cannot tell you anything about the show or the band but we were in the same room at the same time as the castiles and i don't remember a thing about it. i also saw jimmy james and the blue flames there and had to be reminded of this by one of the girls i went to school with years later. ( jimmy changed it to "jimi" and...well you get the idea)
favorite concert you attended...bottom line stand 1975.
favorite unreleased song...this has changed now that some of them have been released but "if i were the priest" is still right up there.
and most importantly WHY? i knew when i first saw bruce and really took him in as an artist that he was who i was...the kid who had been a loner in high school, maybe misunderstood
by his parents/peers and above all else he knew how to express this all in words that totally escaped me. like all of you i constantly found myself saying "how can he know exactly what i am feeling all the time?". had he also been hurt, rejected, and ostracized? of course i was still too young to realize that most people go through these things in life. to me, as with all of you i'm sure, he was writing and performing those things for me about my life. the rest of you were just in that crowd with me. he knew me without ever having said 2 wrods to me. and he continued to speak that way to me for 20 years. we may have grown apart slightly, bruce and i, but he is still the old friend i can come to in times of happiness and trouble and his music will take me somewhere that no other music can. it is music to be listened to alone in your room dancing with wild abandom and it is music to put on your headset and cry uncontrollably over. but the best part for me is turning around when he is on stage and singing "born to run" and watching the faces of all of the other fanatics in the crowd and realizing that i am not alone anymore. there are 20,000 people in that space in that time that feel exactly the way i do and for that moment it transcends all else. or i can come here and talk to you........

Dari,
You sure hit the nail on the head...
Like an old friend, the music that speaks to you will always be there and never let you down. The words and music won't lie to you when you need those words that encourage or share a feeling or mood. Or even allow you to cry when that's what you need to do.
Like alot of folks have already said, Bruce's music has got me through some really tough times.
I know that he didn't experience any of the things that brought me to where I am today but he KNEW enough of the economy and what was happening in the country that drove people away from their hometowns and into new and uncertain lives.

dari, who cares about age? Besides if you are younger than Bruce that still qualifies as young, IMHO. Remember he is young enough to have 3 little ones. You always have excellent stories to tell. The Cafe Wha? Bottom Line shows? It must have been great to be in NYC in those days. Most of us only get to read that stuff in books(or in a dari post). For You, thanks for being our link to the Richmond history. Must have been in the right place at the right time....who would have figured a kid from New Jersey without a record deal would have had a chance to be big in Richmond?

Dari do you write for the Sapranos? I was watching a show from the second season and one of the characters says that he saw Jimi at the Cafe Wha? and told him he had talent. Must have been the night you were there. When I was back in NYC for the 6/17 MSG show we went to the Wha? and our friend Bill got to get up on stage and play with the house band. You'll have to tease him about that the next time you see him.

you are right about the age thing. some days i feel like i am the world's oldest person but most days it's more like
"i'll do that when i grow up". one thing about not having kids...no slap in the face with reality on a daily basis.
weakkneeswilly
you are right about "real world". it is still unreleased as far as i'm concerned. it was a crime to realease that song and the others he played at the christic for the first time the way they were done on the cds.

Dari...
when you said... "there are 20,000 people in that space in that time that feel exactly the way i do and for that moment it transcends all else.".. it made me tihnk about how the concepts of connecting and participating are so vital to the Bruce Live experience.
In Charlotte, I took a big sign that simply said, 1-2-3-4!
I really enjoyed turning around with it, making eye contact with someone else, and seeing the flash of recognition and appreciation come across their faces.
It's a great feeling, isn't it?

occupation-student at NYU
followed bruce since - introduced to Bruce in the fall of 99 but it didn't click with me until the spring of 2000 at which point it REALLY REALLY REALLY clicked...it was the Ghost of Tom Joad that did it...then once I really listened to Thunder Road, it was all over
favorite song- New York City Serenade. This is not a song, it is a poem...an epic...i can hardly contain by the time he gets to "listen to your junk man..."
favorite album - The Wild, The Innocent, and the E-Street Shuffle...one song after another is a blockbuster...this album can't be playing in the background while I'm talking to someone on the phone cause I am too distracted...NYC Serenade and Kitty's Back...Wild Billy...E-Street Shuffle? SO GOOD. Born to Run is close though...I am usually numb with happiness by the time I get to Jungleland and at that point I just don't know what to do with myself...
favorite line from a song - too many to name...ever since i got into bruce though...i use "badlands, you gotta live it every day let the broken heart stand for the price you gotta pay..." as a motto for living...its good to be young and impulsive...
first concert you attended-the first show at the MSG shows in June this summer...changed my life, REALLY...i saw four more after that
favorite concert you attended - EVERY ONE...but seeing E-Street Shuffle live was especially incredibly, not to mention JUNGLELAND and (swoon) Back in Your Arms (that song live was powerful in a way I can't quite describe)

Name: Mike Voss
Age: 44
Born where?/live now: Santa Monica/Reseda, CA
Occupation: Service Writer/Rental Agent
Followed bruce since:
In earnest, since late 1985, with a big boost
from online participation on Backstreets/Luckytown
and the old GEnie board in the early to mid 90's.
Favorite song:
Really varies, but I'm still partial to Thunder Road.
I like to put a good word in for less noticed songs
though, which would include Loose Change.
Favorite album:
I'm interpreting favorite as one I listen to
a lot (as opposed to best, which is, imo, Nebraska,
and not something I think *anybody* puts in the
cd player every day - except perhaps NebraskaFan <G>).
So favorite, although again it varies, would be
TOL - soon giving way to LINYC :-)
Favorite line from a song:
Difficult choice again. We can go for the "merely"
evocative ("Big Wheels roll through fields where sunlight
streams/Meet me in a land of hope and dreams"), to the
chilling ("Got a cold mind to go tripping cross that thin
line"), or the truly profound ("Sister, I won't ask for
forgiveness, my sins are all I have"). You pick :-)
First concert you attended:
10/29/84, LA Sports Arena. $500.00 to VIP Tickets
for a pair of 14th-row center tix and, incredibly, it
took a boot of This Gun's For Hire playing repeatedly
on my turntable to really hook me!
Favorite concert you attended:
You ask hard questions, Dari :-)
11/26/95, Wiltern Theater, LA
10/23/99, Staples Center, LA (front-row upgrade)
7/1/00, NYC (the E-St Band chant and BB to close
are hard to beat - and I'd choose every one of the
final 6 shows as a "favorite" because I flew to NY
from LA without a single ticket, or offer, in hand
and saw all 6!)
Obviously I can't choose one :-)
Favorite unreleased song:
Probably "Follow That Dream"...
and most importantly WHY?
...because that's pretty much what I did during
this tour, seeing 13 shows where I'd previously
only attended 10 from 1984-1996.

An addendum after going back and reading Dari's
entry, in which she answered "First concert
attended" with her FIRST concert, rather than her
first Springsteen gig: my first concert ever was
around 1970-72, at the Valley Music Theater
in Woodland Hills, CA. Headlined by Badfinger,
it was opened by Pure Prairie League and a
"special guest from Long Island" - Billy Joel!
Who stole the show completely.

OK Totally useless but interesting (I thought) information:
I pulled out my hard copy of last year's who are you thread just to see who was still here and this is what I found:
I found 49 members that posted on the 2000 thread last year and who appear to still be with us (2001 who are you thread and/or frequent posters to other threads). Not a bad core group.
Of course this doesn't count those that have changed their screen names or those that read/post infrequently because of school, work, family or whatever.
Still.......not a bad "retention rate"

name - Rich
age - 34 when began posting; now 36
born where?/ born in Chicago, IL, have lived in Dallas, TX since '72
occupation - lawyer and, unlike Geeboss, man of sometimes too many words
followed bruce since - Casually since BITUSA, maybe The River. Intensely since attending Tom Joad show in January of '96
favorite song - Don't think I could ever narrow it down to 1 or even 2. But most consistently Thunder Road, Born to Run and often Brilliant Disguise
favorite album - Almost tougher than favorite song cuz it depends on the mood. But probably BTR.
favorite line from a song - Love me tonight and I promise I'll love you forever...
first concert: Cotton Bowl in September of '85
favorite concert you attended - Probably 11/14/99 in Cleveland cuz 12th row center.
favorite unreleased song - Doesn't really count now, but always was The Promise.
Oops. Almost forgot the most important "why?":
So many reasons. Genuine respect for the fans and compassion for those less fortunate. Not mere lip service. Not afraid to search for the "truth" and be true to himself regardless of commercial risks. Just good, often inspirational music if you let be so.

Why: Family, commitment, connection. The energy and experience of a LIVE show is uncomprable...NOTHING compares. It is an event, and you could say historic beacuse as a fan you mark time by it... you recall that particular time of your life by a LIVE date. It is like nothing else on earth.
