Dance music diva Willa Ford relishes her bad-girl image

RUSKIN - Remember Jessica Rabbit’s immortal catchphrase, “I’m not bad, I’m just drawn that way?”

Those eight words are the antithesis of what makes dance diva Willa Ford unique in today’s pop music world. Not only does the 22-year-old Rustin native refuse to pretend she’s a goody two-shoes but, more importantly, she’s no cartoon character.

In our interview with Ford from her family home just outside of Tampa, she talks about her sophomore album, Sexysexobsessive, the singer reveals facets of her talent hinted at on her 2001 debut, Willa Was Here, that featured her first hit, I Wanna Be Bad.

Her dancehall romp, A Toast To Men, and her heartfelt, Who I Am, that Ford wrote from the point of view of someone gay, the new CD offers some treats.

WATERMARK: How does Sexysexobsessive differ from Willa Was Here?

WILLA FORD: With the last record, I think they put me into the caliber of Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. This not a bad place to be as far as the music industry is concerned. But this record will put me in a place of my own. The record was either coming out as my record or it wasn’t coming out at all.

What is the message behind Who I Am?

To begin with the song is about being gay: Am I or am I not? Was I ever really confused about if I was or wasn’t? I don’t think so. I think I know that I’m straight.

Are you sure?

I know what I like! But it’s a definite issue right now and the more we become open about it the more people start thinking about it. I was also writing from the perspective of some friends of mine that I know have really been suppressed by it, which just pisses me off. I wrote it for them because they don’t have a voice or they refuse to talk about it out of fear, so I did. That’s me. Don’t tell me your secrets because I will write a song about it.

How did you develop your insight into what it’s like to be gay?

When I was in high school everybody used to say “What’s wrong with her? Why doesn’t she have a boyfriend?” I remember how it felt when they started saying I was a lesbian just because I didn’t have a boyfriend. But I got a boyfriend just to get them to stop and now that I am older I wonder why I didn’t just give them the finger and say, “F**k you.”

How did you come up for the name of your new CD?

The whole album, Sexysexobsessive, is about relationships, sexual and non-sexual, straight and gay, and that’s why the whole thing fits together. I wanted to call it Porn Poetry but they wouldn’t let me because that’s not something that Wal-Mart will put on the shelves. So instead Porn Poetry will be the name of my tour.

You can get Trojan Condoms and Wet Lube to be the tour sponsors, Totally! We are having Willa Ford condoms made that say “F**k the Men.” I saw some that Kid Rock had done a while back and I thought that having someone’s name on condoms would make them a little less taboo.

What you think sets you apart from the Britneys and the Christinas of the world?

Honesty. This record is so blatantly honest to the point that it should get me in trouble with my parents, except I have shared everything with my parents. My honesty also sets me apart in that if someone asks me if I got a boob job, then I am going to say, “Yes.” What’s so funny to me is that everyone else is saying that they didn’t, which is bull because we know they did. I don’t mean to call anybody out but I know where they had it done!

Then there is the whole abstinence issue.

I am the one who won’t lie to the public because they will hate that. You have those girls who go on about being abstinent while they are selling sex to every other young person in America. I can be honest and say, “Yes, I am having sex.” Come on, I am 22 years old and if I want to, then I can. Just be safe about it. Why preach fake abstinence when you can be teaching people to be safe about it?

If Justin Timberlake were my boyfriend I would be on him five times a day!

Yeah, who wouldn’t be all over his ass? I would be humping him constantly. What’s the big deal? Now with Jessica Simpson, I can understand it because it was all about her Christian beliefs. I respect people who have different beliefs when it comes to their sexuality and I respected her choice.

And what about poor Nick Lachey? Another hottie who has to have a huge porn collection since he just wasn’t getting any before they said, “I do.”

Oh, that poor guy. You know he had to have, like, elephantitis of the nuts. They were probably hitting the ground.
