Residents vote to demolish Ringo's childhood home

Update (5/28/05) The UK Telegraph reports Ringo has finally responded to the prospect of one of his childhood homes being torn down. He told the paper, "Why are they knocking them down? If it is economically viable, they should do them up. ... Are they going to knock out the centre of Liverpool again? That's what they did before. LONDON (AP) _ Ringo Starr's boyhood home has been saved from demolition. The Victorian row house on Madryn Street in Liverpool, England, was one of 460 properties set to be destroyed under an urban renewal plan. However, the Liverpool City Council agreed Friday to consult with residents before beginning demolition. A previous independent study had indicated 70 percent of residents favored leveling the houses and starting over. However, some residents are concerned it will destroy the sense of community and are proposing that the current houses be refurbished. The fact that Starr lived in one of those houses for three years is not really a factor. It's a private home and it's not subject to any preservation orders. Starr himself recently criticized the demolition plan as economically unsound.
